NASCAR'S RED FLAG (NASCAR Racetrack Planned for new York City!)
New York Post ^ | January 2, 2005 | SAM SMITH

Posted on 01/02/2005 1:38:00 AM PST by nickcarraway

NASCAR promoters hoping to build a huge racetrack on Staten Island say they can manage traffic, but critics wonder if they're just going around in circles.

The 80,000-seat, $550 million stadium would be built in the northwest corner of the borough, between two chronically choked highways and near the notoriously slow two-lane Goethals Bridge.

But the track-builders have no plans to improve highways, other than adding two ramps and toll-plaza capacity. And no government transportation agency has stepped in to help.

Well there is a nightmare just waiting to happen

NASCAR in NY. First the Republican convention, and now this.

Actually, NY allready has a track that NASCAR races at. It's called Watkins Glen. One of a few REAL race tracks that NASCAR visits.

I've been to exactly one NASCAR race in my life, in Phoenix. Brush aside the stereotypes, and I don't see the big issue. Racing draws fans from all walks of life. I saw little-old grannies wearing the T-shirts for their "boy"! Kinda nice to see the elderly and children safe in those crowds.

But if you're going to be a dedicated follower, you're going to need the disposable income for the RVs, 5th wheels, motel rooms, airfare, headphones, etc. Outside the Phoenix track it looked like a giant rock concert encampment. (But law-abiding!) Hope the Staten Island facility has a LOT of parking!

Not necessary.

I think I'll just pilfer some lyrics from a non-freeper. :0)

Seriously, once the creative juices start flowing again, I'll think up something original.

Just give it time.

Definitely!

Here. Have a sticker!

(Pantomimes giving "Arasina" a Magic Zorillo sticker.)

By the way, I actually had these stickers with me when I was at the "Holiday Ball" being held earlier today.

I should have given them out as gag gifts. :0)

Pictures? Pictures? Where are the tri-state gathering photos? Was you-know-who-nj there? Did you meet Ann Coulter?

So, they're really going to have a NASCAR race track on Staten Island? :-)

Why do they race counter-clockwise?

I'm guessing because the left hand turn is much easier to make from a left hand drive then the right turn would be. In Britain they race clockwise.

Perhaps I'm a bit odd - but I don't understand the allure of NASCAR.

It's just like anything else, another good reason to drink beer.

I was kidding but you may be right. But in road racing, even on sections of some of the same superspeedways, they race clockwise. (Of course, most open wheel cars and a few others have an inline driver).
