The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights is nationally headquartered in Manhattan, but has an influence nationwide.
This is due primarily to this organization's president, a marvelously articulate attorney named William Donohue.
I often describe him as "the man who is absolutely incapable of writing a dull press release."
As the latest example of this notable art, Bill Donohue notes:
"Mel Gibson's 'The Passion of the Christ' was one of 49 films deemed eligible for a foreign-language Golden Globe. But it was not among the nominees voted on today by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
"Mel Gibson releases the most significant blockbuster movie of the year, but it's not good enough to make the cut for a Golden Globe. That's because his film promotes Christianity, and the Hollywood crowd will have none of it. The only movies they like to make about Christianity these days are ones that demean it.
"But one movie that did make the cut in the foreign-language category was 'The Motorcycle Diaries,' a film that shamelessly lies about the notorious Cuban communist Che Guevara. According to the Christian Science Monitor, the movie 'paints Guevara as an amiable guy who doesn't appear to have an aggressive bone in his body.' A.O. Scott of the New York Times concurs, saying the film views Guevara 'as a quasi-holy figure' who turns away 'from the corruptions of the world toward a higher purpose.' This may explain why Jack Mathews of the New York Daily News says that director Walter Salles 'comes close at times to posing Guevara as a Christ figure.'
"In other words, because Mel gives us a faithful rendition of Christ's Passion, he is shunned by the Hollywood elite for doing so. But a movie that whitewashes a ruthless tyrant – making him into a Christ-like figure – gets the nod. The message that is being sent is unmistakable: There is no room for Jesus in Hollywood's inn, but there is plenty of room for communist thugs portrayed in a Christ-like manner."

The Globes are a 3 hour commerical designes as a fake awards show.
Even the clothing the stars wear are on loan for free so t hey can plug the makers. It's a fake - don't get worked up over it.
What I find fascinating as that you want to go out of your way to be outraged. Save the outrage for a real reason.

What a load of crap. I have been following the CL for years, and I've never seen them dwell on a "manufactured" issue - and note that I'm not Catholic. Apparently, you don't think it's noteworthy that the Golden Globes ignores a mega-blockbuster like the Passion but glorifies a communist propaganda film like The Motorcycle Diaries. If that's your opinion, fine, you're entitled to it, but to then call it a "manufactured issue" as if there can be no honest disagreement on it leads me to believe that this isn't "honest disagreement" at all.

The only thing that is "unbelievable" is the fact they they are so willing to flaunt their foolishness publicly. You'd think they'd at least try to conceal it.
My point is who cares? The Golden Globes are meaningless. It is like listening to teh opinion of the crazy old lady with all the cats in her house - that is how meaningless the Globes are.
Mel Gibbson would have had to bribe his way onto the show and he propbaly has too much class to soil himself giving out bribe money and promising to appear on television to get this televised event publicity - and make them have more money. Lastly, the two movies in question are not in the same catagories. This fake award show has so many classifications that you can have dozens of nominations for the award - more movies nominated means more money for the producers.
You are correct - it seems tou think teh Golden Globes are important and have weight. They are in fact unimportant and a fake award show.
If we were talking Oscar awatds then we would have an issue but the Globes? If you created yoru own award show and taped it in your basement it would have more critical credibility.

I've looked at these top 10 lists and they ignore The Passion altogether. Not on a Best Movies list or a Worst Movies list. I suppose that's the point. Time had it "tied" with F911.
I question the common sense of any conservative who still gives these stupid award ceremonies any type of credibility by actually watching the garbage.
Mel doesn't have to worry about crappy awards, when his reward is the number of people who went to watch his film. I seriously doubt that crappy communist diaries movie can compare in any way, shape or form to Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ.
Mel, if you're listening, how about a Mad Max 4 for your next movie? I'd love to see another one like The Road Warrior :)

To this day I relish the fact that the first Full Bird Colonel I had as a commander had accompanied (led the SP Teams) Bolivian Forces that took out Che. I know a man who rid the earth of one more piece of pond scum.
Unfortunately, a "more reasonable entertainment critic" is still part or parcel of the MSM establishment, or he/she wouldn't hold the position. Therefore, conservatives cannot get a fair shake from Hollywood, no matter how brilliant a product they produce.

It's important to keep in mind that The Golden Globes aren't given out by Hollywood. It's foreign journalists kissing up to Hollywood. Who cares what they think? The Oscars, which ARE given out by Hollywood, actually tend to be conservative.
JUST TODAY, on the Charlie Rose boards, I was handed this argument:
"I didn't pay a dime to see M Moore's movie, but it got awards, so I'm not sure I'm "ashamed" of it as an American (of course, you are welcome to be)."

YOU apparently believe that the reason the leftist movies get all the attention is because they pour more money into the effort of getting the nomination. I believe you're wrong, I think they'd continue to get the nominations even if the leftist movies didn't put a dime into it. While I don't know the relative amounts of bribes put in by various movies to get into these awards, I maintain my position because I believe that the relationship between nominations and bribes -cannot- possibly be greater than the relationship between nominations and leftist slant. It's hard to get higher than effective infinity.
Even if you're right, you certainly haven't offered any proof, and you certainly haven't demonstrated that the Catholic League would be aware of any such proof, so to decry them as a "sham" organization using this as evidence (as if anyone who doesn't agree with you knows "the real truth" but is just pretending otherwise in order to get attention) is a complete crock.
