Once again, Dubya proves he's a poker master:
Devastating tsunami hits, may be the world's worst disaster. This is shaping up to be a moster round of poker. Initial ante is 15 million, Bush immediately raises to 35 million. Everyone wonders, what is he thinking, that's not too big of a raise, he should have come in for more than that - obviously displaying that he has a weak hand. Each country looks at their stack of chips, and decides to join in the game, looking to knock the US out - France jumps in for 42 million, thinking they become the chip leader after this, other countries throw their money into the pot. Everyone looks to the US, now that they have been re-raised all around the table.
Bam - Bush goes all in, 350 million! Every looks around the table, as realization sinks in. Dubya slow-played them AGAIN!!
Tsunami aid is not a freaking poker game. I certainly don't believe GW thinks of it as one, either. Only you do.
If President Bush wanted $6 trillion, he'd ask Congress for $12 trillion and end up wit the $6 trillion he'd wanted in the first place.
I don't think I'd like to play poker against him.
I'm not so sure that his "Islam is a Religion of Peace" and his proposed immigration policy isn't another form of this political poker.
The 42 million the French threw in will probably be traced to the Oil for Food scam, which means it was our Tax money in the first place!!
US, OUT of the UN and the UN out of the US!
It has become common knowledge that GWB was quite the poker player in his day. The Liberals want him to show all his cards up front all of the time, so that they can play against his hand.
He seems sharp enough to give them some opportunity to also reveal their intents, meanwhile reserving his complete play when more information is made available.
Yes, tragedy is not a poker game, but since GWB seems to be a target for so many, he must play his hands carefully to maintain a full set of advantages.
This is what he seems to do, and very well!!
Noah might disagree with you.
It's still unconstitutional.
Everything has some political aspects in it even at the career, job and personal level. Since this is the leaders of countries and the world leaders arena you bet politics are still involved.
I'm just getting into Texas Hold'em poker and have finally caught on to the terminology.
The 42 million from France and all the pledged millions from the rest of these socialist hell holes will never show up. But they got on TV and got some nice soundbites in, and that's all that matters.
It is to the Blame America First Crowd.
Relax, this isn't meant to denigrate what is happening, I'm just pointing out how I think Bush has manuvered countries into stepping up and pledging more donations than they might have initially. I believe if he had stepped up to the microphone, bit his lip, said, "I feel your pain" and pledged 350 million, 500 million, 1 billion, whatever - these other countries would have felt that 'here's the US again, flexing their muscle, throwing all their money at the disaster, trying to buy some respect. Therefore we don't need to dig quite as deep.'
By putting his brother Jeb at the head of the fact-finding delegation, W also trumps anyone else who may be planning their own international PR move. (Think Clinton and/or Carter)
I have always felt that Bush is a poker player par excellence! I would NEVER play poker with him. He is amazing to watch!
Your post is absurd. Bush and his staff were doing their jobs by assessing the situation before reacting. A time like this is no time for games. I can tell you are still a democrat. Go back or get with the game!
Bush is the master of the game.
Poker is a metaphor for politics, and there is always politics.
I for one, understood what your were saying, I did not really think of it that way, but you are correct, the other countries were giving paultry sums, like France and their 175,000 last I saw they bumped it to 57 million that is quite an increase. What I think is sad, is that even the Tsunami tragedy has to be made a political situation.

Interesting take on events.
