A lot of Republicans have forgotten that the Religious Right were all New Deal Democrats a generation ago. A lot of them will listen to an appeal to economic populism. Gay marriage and abortion matter but they don't pay the rent.
The problem with the "New Democrats" is that they did not give a damn about the economic interests of non-college educated, blue collar Americans (the Democratic base). After all, couldn't they just go to community college and learn HTML ? NAFTA was a decision to expend their well being to those of knowledge worker professionals. Blue collar Americans responded by voting their cultural conservatism and abandoning the Democratic Party.
Hillary is smart enough to realize that NAFTA was a worthless "victory". A "victory" over your own base does not make you stronger. It cost the Democratic Party the voters who might have given Gephardt (who could have beaten Bush) a fighting chance in the primaries. Without economic populism (anti illegals, anti outsourcing, anti "free trade at all costs) the Democratic Party has only latte liberals, not the blue collar voters it needs to become the majority party.
Exactly correct, I own a bar in Texas and talk polictics with blue collars workers all the time. I score points when I point out that the Democrats are the party of anti-America preverts and baby killers. I get my clock cleaned trying to defend GOP economic policy. In fact I gave up trying to defend it, you can't. Normally we all agree that both parties suck for diferent reasons.
Because we believe in God, understand that life on earth is quite temporary, do not think murder is justified by the pre-birth age of the victim, know that there can NEVER be such a thing as an actual "gay" "marriage", know that money is only money and are satisfied that it not be taxed too heavily, know that there are reasons why we have a military (to kill bad people and break their things), understand that whatever goes on in public skewels is not necessarily describable as "education", love our families far more than we will ever love ANY government and know that the 2nd Amendment exists to keep our gummint more honest and less threatening than it would otherwise be. We also know that a bad day of hunting, fishing or baseball or football watching beats a good day of hanging around some latte shop soaking up windtunnel poetry written and read by feminazi sobsisters.
Let's make sure that the Demonrats are limited to coastal and metrosexual latte guzzlers. We can do this by waging a little social issue and ethnic warfare. Ridding Americans of the NAFTA, GATT, WTO nuisances and other means of enriching Euroweenies and Chicoms may raise the cost of living for the latte crowd but it is well-worth doing. We do not have to machine gun the mamacitas at the border with Mexico on Live (so to speak) at Five.
