Fire in Buenos Aires club kills nine, 200 injured
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina, Dec 31 (Reuters) At least nine people were killed and 200 injured when a fire erupted in a crowded nightclub in central Buenos Aires, police said today.
Local media reported that as many as 6,000 people may have been inside the club listening to a band play when the blaze broke out an hour before midnight.
Television showed pictures of the bodies of young people lying on the sidewalks outside the club, while rescue workers evacuated people from inside.
Parents rushed to the scene desperate to find their sons and daughters.
The injured were taken to at least six hospitals in the city.
Firefighters told reporters at the scene that the fire had been extinguished.
Most of the boliche (dance club) places in Argentina are so packed, I'm amazed there weren't more deaths. If there were 6000 people inside, the place probably isn't meant to hold more than 1500 or 2000.
Must be a mighty big club.

Now it's up to 149 dead, at least 500 injured.

Has anybody done a tally on how many people are killed or
severely injured from nightclub disasters like this?
Seems like every year or so, 2 or 3 nightspots goes up in
flames...
Sorry to see it happening, but it seems to happen often
enough such that one wonders if there isn't some kind of
common denominator to all or most of them (besides the
obvious of somebody playing with fire in a crowded room
scenario)..I mean something like ratio of people to
square footage or escape route volume handling, percentage
of flammable material, level of drunkenness, time of
the year, outside temperature, type of entertainment
but whatever it was....don't forget...Bush knew(sarcasm)!
