United States President George Bush was tonight accused of trying to undermine the United Nations by setting up a rival coalition to coordinate relief following the Asian tsunami disaster.
The president has announced that the US, Japan, India and Australia would coordinate the worlds response.
But former International Development Secretary Clare Short said that role should be left to the UN.
I think this initiative from America to set up four countries claiming to coordinate sounds like yet another attempt to undermine the UN when it is the best system we have got and the one that needs building up, she said.
Only really the UN can do that job, she told BBC Radio Fours PM programme.
It is the only body that has the moral authority. But it can only do it well if it is backed up by the authority of the great powers.
Ms Short said the coalition countries did not have good records on responding to international disasters.
She said the US was very bad at coordinating with anyone and India had its own problems to deal with.
I dont know what that is about but it sounds very much, I am afraid, like the US trying to have a separate operation and not work with the rest of the world through the UN system, she added.

Can we PLEASE get out of the freakin' UN already! SHEEEESH!!!!
Undermining the UN and this is bad because..........Short is such a pillowbiter
Only the UN has the moral authority to help those in need? That is an odd proposition.
Is there anyone of consequence in the Congress who wants us out of the UN?
Remember only the UN has the 'moral authority'.
;-> ROTFLMAO!
Wasn't she a minister in the British government who were very hostile to PM Blair and President Bush because of the war on Iraq? Why we should even consider what is she saying? This women hate President Bush and the US.
Put the U.N. out of its misery - it shapes up as the most corrupt organization in the whole human history
3 cheers for President Bush!
Hail to the chief! Since when is the UN the best system we've got?!
Only really the UN can do that job; she told BBC Radio Four's PM programme.
ROFLOL...did they send her to drug testing right after the interview?
It is the only body that has the moral authority. But it can only do it well if it is backed up by the authority of the great powers.
Such a short post, but it kept getting funnier and funnier! UN...moral authority? Can anyone say Oil for Food? Can anyone say Sudan and Libya leading the human rights commission?
Ms Short said the coalition countries did not have good records on responding to international disasters.
this simply has to be a farce! Can anyone say Rwanda...Sudan? The UN is one of the most corrupt entities in human history.
Short is an old sixties Marxist...as is most of the Labour party. Poor England, it's been on a steady march to oblivion and nothing can save her.
Could all this fuss about not involving the UN have anything to do with UN bureaucrats NOT being able to skim money?
Bush 'Undermining UN with Aid Coalition'
From your lips to God's ears, Scotsman.
I wondered how long it would take for the whiners to surface about this. I thought when I heard Pres Bush's words on this "coalition" - it was a "kiss our butt" to the UN. Gotta love that man.
The UN should be undermined at every opportunity. The US should expel them from our country and sell the property to a private business engaged in free market capitalism. The US should leave the UN and denounce it publicly. The UN officials responsible for the Oil for Palaces program should be arrested and tried in a US court for felony grand theft.
The United States of America STILL has the right to do what it wants to do.
Good for you, President Bush. Great idea to form this coalition.
The liberals (here and overseas) just want press. Let's ignore them.
