"The 14-year-old granddaughter of film director Lord Attenborough has died in the Asian tsunami disaster.
The dead girl, Lucy, was in the Thai resort of Phuket with her 17-year-old sister Alice, brother Sam, her mother Jane, father Michael and her mother-in-law Jane Holland.
Missing are Lord Attenborough's daughter Jane and her mother-in-law.
A statement issued on behalf of the grieving star, who directed Gandhi and acted in Jurassic Park, said he believes they are dead too.
But his son-in-law Michael and grandson Sam survived the horror unscathed, and his other granddaughter Alice is in hospital being treated for her injuries.
The Holland family left their London home only last week for a two-week holiday at the Thai beach resort.
The statement read: "Lord (Richard) Attenborough and his wife, Sheila, have lost three members of their immediate family in the tidal wave disaster that hit the beaches of Thailand on Boxing Day morning.
"Their elder daughter, Jane, is missing, as is her mother-in-law, Jane Holland.
"The Attenboroughs' granddaughter, Lucy, 14, died at the scene. Another granddaughter, Alice, 17, is now being treated in hospital.
"Two members of the family group survived unscathed. They are the Attenboroughs' son-in-law, Michael Holland, and eldest grandson, Sam.
"The Holland family left their London home last week for a two week holiday at the Thai beach resort.
" 'Lord Attenborough, 81, his wife, other daughter, Charlotte, and son, Michael, together with their families, ask that the news media respect their need for privacy at this terrible time. None has anything further to add.' "
Only 14 years old... very sad.
Don't forget "The Great Escape" with Steve McQueen.
Also the original "Flight of the Phoenix"
Attenborough also co-starred with Steve McQueen in "The Sand Pebbles".
Oh my, that's one of my favorite movies!
Poorly written article.
I doubt that the 14 year old had a mother-in-law.

Poorly written article."
Sir Richard Attenborough's daughter is missing along with his daughter's mother-in-law and his daughter's daughter, who would be Sir Attenborough's granddaughter. The article is choppy there, but I didn't do much better:
bd476 said: "God Bless and keep his daughter, her mother-in-law and his granddaughter and send healing comfort to his surviving granddaughter and all Attenborough and Holland family members."
Great movie. Wow, the sad stories are never ending from this disaster.
There are no words of the horror that befell that area of the world on December 26, 2004. Silent prayers for all.

I'm sorry for this loss and as this time of year. At his age, this must be especially upsetting. It's never easy to outlive a child, let along a grandchild as well.
