A little off topic, but if it is appropriate to call Swedes, "Swedes" (and I believe it is) and Brits "Brits", why is it inappropriate to call Japs "Japs".

Because Japs rhymes with "drats" -- oh, wait....

probably because of the context - we used that term along with some well-deserved venom during the war, so a negative connotation stuck long after our differences were settled.

Because the term came into widespread use in WWII. It is probably still inappropriate to call Germans "jerry" too.
