His crime is having put Russia in a situation not easily "forgivable", as Dr Rice would have said. It's never a good idea to be in the middle of a diplomatic row, and it's always easier to fire the guy than to publicly accuse a nation.

Blow an op, win an election, fire a whistle-blower? The Pentagon released photo's of the convoys right after the leak. Sounds to me like a balancing of follow-the-rules with win the election.

I'm with you on this. I don't like leaking to Gertz at the Wn. Times any more than I like leaks to the NYSlimes or the Washington Poost.
