A Day in the Life of President Bush (photos): 12.29.04

As the Asian quake and tsunami death toll topped 100,000 and is rising, President Bush said the United States' initial grant of $35 million in SE Asia was 'only the beginning of our aid.' He said the United States, India, Australia and Japan have formed an international coalition to coordinate worldwide relief and reconstruction efforts for the Asian region. Aid agencies today warned disease will also cause massive casualties among the survivors as the biggest relief effort in history began.

The president took issue with Jan Egeland, the United Nations' emergency relief coordinator who called the US "stingy" in regard to helping other nations. (Egeland later said his remarks were misinterpreted.) Bush noted that the United States provided $2.4 billion "in food, in cash, in humanitarian relief to cover the disasters for last year. ... That's 40 percent of all the relief aid given in the world last year."

Enjoy your visit to Sanity Island!

Do you know how your money compares to our dollars? I always wondered how much your 'pound' equalled, for example.

Fortunately dad is in the hospital under the NHS so no bill there but it is the little things that are not covered that cost such as telephone/TV costs which I suspect will work out something like 10.00 pounds per day plus the cost of getting up to the hospital to visit though local petrol costs in the UK are very high just under 5.00 pounds sterling a gallon, I have to smile when I hear Americans complaining about your gas prices we would love them here in the UK.

As you hardly get any fresh fruit in hospital I will have to take some in to Dad tomorrow.

At present something like 1.80 - 1.90 dollars equals one pound sterling earlier in the year though the dollar was much stronger at 1.65 approx.

Thanks for your comments on dad.

Yes the plumbing bill was expensive but the poor chap was here over 4 years and had to go door to door to find out which way blockage was and he was great especially when did not get much help from the neigbours that are anti us because of our pigeons. So for the time and work he put in it was not expensive but what with everything else it just seemed it. I gave him a 10.00 pound tip as he could have easily charged more because unexpected drainage problems came to light but kept to his fixed price.

Re Klintoon's comments:

I was about jumping up and down and SO happy to hear Krauthammer blast him royally on Brit Hume's show with Jim Angle tonight -- said how cheap it was of him to do that.. that when he's on foreign soil as a former US President, he's speaking for America. Right on, Charles!!! You're the best!! (Of course, Juan just HAD to not let us down and WHINE.) Even Chris Wallace asked if he wanted some cheese with that whine. It's a segment worth seeing if y'all get a chance to see the replay.

Hi snugs,
Are they giving Blair problems because he is on holiday
in Egypt while a tsunami disaster and he didn't come
running home. BTW, he shouldn't have to.

With the dumping on Bush, I guess people haven't heard yet
there are phones, and at his ranch he is set up as he would be in D.C.

I remember those petrol prices. They made me gasp 30 years ago. You're right to smile at our grumbling.

Your plumber sounds like a decent guy. And since he spent 4 hours it obviously was a big job.

We don't seem to get so hung up over Blair's holidays as some Americans seem to about GWB. The only thing we do not like is if Blair or whoever does not declare when he gets a freebie which he was accused of a few days ago.

I am no lover of Tony Blair especially his domestic policy but I see no reason for him cutting short his holiday he can operate from aboard with the modern technology on holiday as he can on holiday in the UK as you quite rightly state about GWB.

I did hear part of the end of Juan's whining, and Wallace's comment about cheese with the whine. LOLOL! I don't know WHY they keep Juan on; he looks like a bigger jerk/idiot every time he opens his mouth. He's just completely outclasses no matter what he says on there.

The replay will be on here, later tonight; hope I'll be up for it.

LOL! Well, then I hope it is secure enough not to be blown away in one of our Texas "tornadas"!

We'd see him flying overhead like Santa!

Clinton shifts from laughing and joking to faking tears at the Wellstone memorial when he becomes aware that camera is on him.

He deserves an Oscar for the Best Presidential ACTOR of all time ... BTW, that was Ron Brown's funeral ..remember the allegation that there was a suspicious bullet-sized hole in his head after the plane crash? What a bunch of crooks, liars and thieves. Next to the Toon is his "minister" .. called in to "counsel" him after his chronic morality and character were made public with Monica.

ohhhhh. They guy next to Clintoon, what's his name? Wasn't he in the news very recently? Geeze, I just can't think at the moment.

Yes, Ron Brown memorial is the occasion. Wellstone much to recent. And aren't there about 30 deaths with mysterious links to the Clintons? That's a helluva lot.
