Standing in the snow outside The Union Leader of Manchester, Muskie called the paper’s publisher a “gutless coward.” Muskie’s campaign flagged after the confrontation.

Edmund Muskie choked up several times during that speech, and several news organizations reported that he cried, but a dispute has persisted for years whether it was tears or melted snowflakes on his face.

Let me just say that I'm sorry that this woman died.

If the truth be known, however, Ed Muskie was a real loser--even a bigger one than Howard Dean. He started the Primaries with the whole Democratic machine behind him and made one mistake after another. Even his own staff couldn't tolerate him. As a result, McGovern (who no one thought could win anyway) was nominated & lsot big to Nixon (guess that was a good thing).

I too offer my condolences to her family.

But the fact that she died in her home outside of Washington, rather than in Maine speaks volumes of the continuing need for term limits to end the development of a political class with its loyalties to places other than those they represent.

As a Mainer, I can attest that Ed Muskie as the states governor started the process of big spending state government and high taxes that are now ruining this states economy. He may have brought the Dems to power here, but the cost of entitlement programs that bought them the voters has been ruinous.

I liked her. She had a real sense of humour.
