They're gone. I hope more made it than the five I see there. To the left, you can see the head of a person in the water.
UNderstood. They didn't know it was coming...and then probably didn't recognize the danger until too late.
I think you could be right. There is a story of a 20 day old baby that survived on a floating mattress. That baby doesn't look much older than a 2 or 3 weeks so fits that bill.
That's what I was thinking. What a miracle to come out of such tragedy.
I was reading up about how many people had been killed in the
September 11 attacks in New York and came across the articles about
the significance of the number 11. I then worked out that the recent
earthquake happened on 26 of December... 26/12
2+6 = 8
1+2 = 3
.... 8+3 = 11!!!
Is this coincidence or is there something weird going on???
Baronne
My stereo speakers go up to 11.
What do you think about that?
"I'd rather he'd (Osama) been on a beach in Phuket". You got that right!
How high is this wave?
I was guessing about 30-40 ft assuming the surfer riding the wave was about 4 ft tall crouched.
It's very possible that long lens was used to take the picture. Would have helped also.
The just showed ladybug on CNN. Pink & sleeping.
OMG these are terrible pictures. We have friends whose son is working in missions in Thailand. I'm not sure just where tho and the parents only JUST returned home.
I've heard that some people sent their kids out to collect fish when the water receded.
I suspect we will never know the whole death toll, because there have been so many victims washed out to sea.Not to mention that there's no reliable census of the local populations in the first place.
Yeah, looking at the resolution it's probable that it was a telephoto lens.
Sometimes avid photographers get so wrapped up in the picture, though, that they can't think of anything else.
I don't mind when there's a warning but yesterday's NYT front page was uncalled for. And today's front page of the Seattle PI has a montage of maybe 100 dead bodies, including dead babies and nudes.
That level of disrespect is astonishing and, frankly, racist: they'd never pulled that if this had occurred in a Western Nation.
Hell, here at FR people had to hunt around the internet to find pictures of people jumping out of the WTC on 9-11. The NYT certainly never had the naked bodies of New York fire fighters on the front page.
I almost can't believe I'm pinning it on racism but the only thing I can think is that these papers believe Asians don't have to respected in death because they're not white.
I don't agree with you on racism at all. There are plenty of pictures of the dead westerners lining beaches. It just happens that local populations wiped out outnumber the tourists.
This has more to do with the dead being mingled in with the damage, media that is not into censoring as much as US media, than racism.
If I saw the water recede like that, I think it would have taken me a couple minutes to figure out what was happening. That water going out has to come back in, and probably with a lot of energy. Instict would have kicked in and I would high-tail it out.
Then why weren't the 9-11 dead shown in a similar way?
A montage is not "mingled in debris".
