Names of Missing and Dead

The Jerusalem Post (http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=JPost/JPArticle/ShowFull&cid=1104035110442) in an update on the tsunami casualties today posted a link to a password-protected Thai government site listing all of the known names of the victims from Saturday’s tsunami, along with the password to access it.

If you wish to locate the victims for a particular nationality, you can access them by following this link: (http://www.ems.narenthorn.thaigov.net/tsunami/login.php) and typing in “USER” for the username and “PASSWORD” for the password…without the quotation marks, of course. The site offers the option of listing the names by country of origin.

This information should be of particular value to anyone with friends or family known to be in the immediate region at the time of the catastrophe.

The servers seem to be a bit bogged down presently, so your best bet if it is yet too sluggish upon your reading this is to simply wait awhile and try again.

With thousands of relatives worldwide frantic for information about loved ones out of touch, why would any government or relief agency go to the trouble of creating a list of potential victims and then password it?

Thanks! I will keep on trying until I get through. My dad was spending Christmas in India and we have not heard from him. The travel agency claims that he "should" be to the north and away from the coast, but the fact is we won't really know until he calls.

I think an important thing to remember is that this list is in flux and the status of the names already on it could change or some names could be removed altogether. There is little doubt we will never be able to know what happened to many of the folks who were along the beaches as these waves struck.

I realize my comment here was posted on another thread and I am not trying to change the subject here. But:

With communications technology today, ie: cell phones, TV, radio, I still need to know who is responsible for NOT giving all the countries (11) involved a WARNING.

I realize it was 5 minutes in some cases but it was also a few hours in other cases.

Notice, we are getting little to do accountability for this lack of communications.

--------------------------------------------------------

Now, on posting the names. This seems like a no brainer. Let them post what they know is factual on a public domain.

I realize we are talking 3rd world countries, but there is a lot of crap going on here.

I was really amazed the Thai government has done that much.

I hope you hear something soon from your Dad. I'll keep him in my prayers. Good luck and God bless!
