Let's show the world what the USA is all about. No rhetoric, just plain action!

We have sent 12 ships from the Pacific Fleet to the affected areas although, despite the title, this isn't mentioned in the article.

Soon the "world community" will be condemning our occupation of Thailand and Sri Lanka.

Marines are the hit men of the USA. Why are we turning them into a meals on wheels project ?

What, no Europeans?! What are we going to do without Norway's ambulance or Germany's first-aid kit?!

Now if he'd just send em into Camden we'd see some change at home....

Can someone please answer me why the Governor has not sent in the national guard there?

Hope the world (liberal) doesn't think we are trying to take over, and subvert the world thru our actions.

I'm reminded of that story about the American soldier, that (Democrat) Zell Miller so passionately recounted at the RNC...in fact, let me see if I can find it...

Never in the history of the world has any soldier sacrificed more for the freedom and liberty of total strangers than the American soldier. And, our soldiers don't just give freedom abroad, they preserve it for us here at home.

For it has been said so truthfully that it is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us the freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the agitator, who has given us the freedom to protest.

It is the soldier who salutes the flag, serves beneath the flag, whose coffin is draped by the flag who gives that protester the freedom to abuse and burn that flag.

No one should dare to even think about being the Commander in Chief of this country if he doesn't believe with all his heart that our soldiers are liberators abroad and defenders of freedom at home.

Truth to tell, without the United States, the world would go to hell in a handbasket. For reasons too numerous and too obvious to count, people hate us. I imagine that they would take our help in a hot minute.

Just random thoughts from a "stingy" American FReeper.

Keeping law and order is exactly what they're for in a situation like this. They'll be doing a job similar to what they're doing in Haiti. Anarchy has probably broken out in wide swaths of Sri Lanka and Sumatra by now and US Marines may be they only way to stop millions from dying.

Marines are not doctors, nurses, social workers, or donut dollies....they are our finest combat assault troops....

If the president wanted to take over Thailand, Sri Lanka, or N Korea these are the guys to send...

This is wrong to send Marines

imo

Marines have the training to take control of a situation and to protect the innocent, including the doctors, nurses, social workers, etc.

Their job is not to assault anyone, but to protect.

I'm sure the Marines will be maintaining social order and operating heavy equipment for a short term. Nothing wrong with that.

It is within our capability to lend a helping hand in a time of great need, and the PR aint too bad either.

The Marines are for whatever the Commander-in-Chief determines they are for. No doubt they are the only forces readily available and trained to handle the mass confusion that is setting in over there. We should just be happy they aren't being asked to trade in their camo helmets for sky blue ones as they land.

Because it shows we care enough to send the very best. Hard times calls for extreme measures, and I'm sure the Marines are needed as they are more capable than most even in unconventional missions.
