Keeping law and order is exactly what they're for in a situation like this. They'll be doing a job similar to what they're doing in Haiti. Anarchy has probably broken out in wide swaths of Sri Lanka and Sumatra by now and US Marines may be they only way to stop millions from dying.

The Marines are for whatever the Commander-in-Chief determines they are for. No doubt they are the only forces readily available and trained to handle the mass confusion that is setting in over there. We should just be happy they aren't being asked to trade in their camo helmets for sky blue ones as they land.

I'm wondering why Newsmax is saying the marines when the words Marines is not in the article and did not come out of Bush's mouth.

I agree.
But if the president feels the need to send there I'll abide by that.

"Marines are the hit men of the USA. Why are we turning them into a meals on wheels project ?" Marines have been used for humanitarian purposes many times.
Like someone said, they serve wherever their CIC says they are to serve.
We took buses from Pendleton to fight the brush fires at Big Sur, but I doubt anyone knew about it.
Of course, Marines would rather be killing things, but there's a time to kill and a time to preserve life if possible.
