I watched some video of the wave coming into a beach resort, and it wasn't really even a violent event, it was just a tremendous surface of water moving in and taking everything with it. I had expected a tall wall of water crashing in, but it was like silent death.

Bury them they must but it's doubtful people have time to count& record them, much less report them to Mr. Wildlife. It's so important to get the dead buried whatever the species they shouldn't even bother to separate them, though they will since some people will get squeamish over the idea of their loved ones being mixed in with other species. Heck, some folks won't even take no-strings aid from another human being if the religion is 'wrong.'

Instinct I tend to agree, animals have developed a 6th sense for things like this, they are better in tune with nature than we are, or we just ignore the warning signals.

"I absolutely believe that."
So do I. They sensed something was coming and moved to higher ground.

"I think animals can sense disaster. They have a sixth sense. They know when things are happening." I absolutely believe that.
So do humans, albeit almost obliterated at this stage of our evolution by misunderstandings, denial, persecution, etc.

"
It would be interesting to understand the mechanism that animals used to avoid this situation."
All animals, including humans have a small amount of magnetic iron in the brain. Birds use it for navigation. Dogs bark and cats go nuts before earthquakes because a low frequency wave comes first. Humans should actually pay attention to this and change what we are doing when our sences tell us to. But we won't.

I believe man's sixth sense has mostly atrophied due to lack of use.

Two possible explanations:
1. Tourists hang out on the beach, animals don't (crowded out by the tourists).
2. Most animals run faster than humans do.

"I think animals can sense disaster. They have a sixth sense. They know when things are happening."I am a farmer and have been observing animals my entire adult life. Cattle, pheasant & deer, specificly, seem to sense when a bad snow storm is on the way. They tend to feed heavily and then hunker down a couple of hours before the storms hit.
It would make sense that other animals do likewise.
To: Huck
So, our 6th sense is now about a 5 1/2?

I was wondering about that from the beginning......how many pets were lost. I heard one guy on tv say he saw alot of dead dogs lying around, but I forget what country that was.
Pets matter too....don't put it down that people think of them as important members of their family.

These really give you an idea of what it would be like looking at the ocean and seeing what looks to be an unusual, but not especially threatening, wave coming toward you.I watched a few of the videos of the wave last night with my nephew and we were both saying "GET THE HELL OUTTA THERE! RUN! RUN!" If that had been me, I would have just turned tail and headed to high ground.
I guess that makes me smarter than the average vacationer?
