Earlier today, responding to these remarks by the UN's Jan Egeland
But U.N. Undersecretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Jan Egeland suggested that the United States and other Western nations were being "stingy" with relief funds, saying there would be more available if taxes were raised.
"It is beyond me why are we so stingy, really," the Norwegian-born U.N. official told reporters. "Christmastime should remind many Western countries at least, [of] how rich we have become."
"There are several donors who are less generous than before in a growing world economy," he said, adding that politicians in the United States and Europe "believe that they are really burdening the taxpayers too much, and the taxpayers want to give less. It's not true. They want to give more."
I sent this email to Jan Egeland
You seem to be under the impression that the ONLY way that individuals can donate money to charities and disasters is if the government TAKES the money from them in the form of taxes and gives it to YOU.
Leaving aside the fact that the UN is the last place I want MY government to give money (see Oil for Food scandal), we don't need to be taxed into giving. The United States is a generous country and we WILL give a lot of money to this cause; we're just not going to give it to YOU to spend as you see fit.
The people who really need and deserve the money will get it, without you having the opportunity to cut your slice off of it.

P.S. Forget about a UN and/or world tax; it's not going to happen.
Tell it like it is. He said stingy and he can't take it back.
I have just about had enough of these American haters, standing on OUR land and saying crap like this.
I saw her on Fox today twice, and twice this was her message.
I saw her too but Charles Krauthammer slapped her down a couple of times. The other times he just smirked at her, like "Ceci, you ignorant....."
Thata girl!
Good going.......sir.
Thanks
You notice what he did in his email; he's completely ignoring what he said in the beginning (what I suspect is what he REALLY thinks) and is now trying to hide behind Trent Duffy's DIPLOMATIC wording at the White House, completely ignoring Duffy's word "recently." He's lucky Duffy didn't say "Did ya read his RETRACTION?"
Bump
"You also da girl! Sorry!"
Whew! I was worried you couldn't tell the difference any more, b-dog!
What a LOAD OF HOOEY!!
That has to be an automated response, they don't address your main point [raising taxes to fund aid].
P.S. Forget about a UN and/or world tax; it's not going to happen.
LOL! Nothing like twisting the knife when it's in the wound!
And isn't it odd the UN didn't direct you to the actual transcript of his remarks?
I still can't find one.

I'm usually NOT very tactful at all, as I am repeatedly reminded on this forum.
But as I said above, I have about had enough.
How disgusting can you get? Here is Israel, just trying to help another country, & wanting to do a good deed. I wish that President Bush would tell the Sri Lankan govenment that they don't need our help either if they are going to have that attitude towards Israel.
use the word niggardly next time and that should have them in a tizzy...
Nice going, Howlin. We need to make these freaks of nature accountable for their fightin' words against the US.
I, for one, am tired of the bashing we take.
