'Alexander' on Life Support

'Alexander' on Life Support

Warner Brothers is about ready to pull the plug on Oliver Stone's "Alexander."

The $200 million movie has become a gigantic fiasco, the company's biggest since Kevin Costner's "The Postman" took in only $17 million.

"Alexander," which stars Colin Farrell, Angelina Jolie and Val Kilmer, has only grossed $33.9 million. The sad fellow took in a little over $41,000 during the holiday weekend on its remaining (and paltry) 232 screens. That translates into $177 per show. Ouch!

The remaining exhibitors who have had this dud are now entering their sixth week and will likely dump it. Expect an "Alexander" DVD in time for Valentine's Day, possibly with featured "extras," like watching Farrell get his blonde highlights — just kidding.

Warner Brothers must be scratching its collective head right now.

Granted, "Alexander" is a terrible movie, but Clint Eastwood's critically acclaimed "Million Dollar Baby" is still struggling in its limited release, even though it picked up one theater from the eight it had.

I guess there just aren't enough poofers out there to support a $200M movie about a lisping conqueror. Then again it will probably be a hit in the San Fran bathhouses.

The problem with the movie isn't that Alexander the Great is being portrayed as a homosexual ~ that's more or less history and subject to debate.

Rather, the problem is that we have what is fundamentally a movie about a homosexual who is being portrayed as Alexander the Great!

It doesn't help to have a worthless actor portray Alexander either.

strange... you'd think it'd be up for an oscar... I mean "The Passion" isn't and Moore's 9/11 lie is.

That was from one fat, gay kid munching down 4 buckets of popcorn. Probably the guy who carved GAF into his forehead to fake a hate crime.

This just goes to show how homophobic and bigoted Americans have become and why we need Federally funded gay diversity training in all public schools.

Anyone who would trust Oliver Stone with $200 million deserves to lose it.

the 'thighs' comment was enough to gag most potential viewers

I have always been fascinated about Alexander (the real one) and I was going to see this (especially since it has Angelina Jolie) - but I could not picture Anthony Hopkins making that remark without wanting to yak all over

Clearly this movie needs to be incorporated into "sensitivity training" and "multicultural awareness" classes. Otherwise millions would have "adored it" everywhere. /sarcasm

A little fuzzy math here.

41000/232 = $177 per screen for the weekend.

How many showings were done per screen? Maybe 3 per night for 3 days? That gives under $20 per showing. About two people in the entire theater each time it's shown. Woohoo! Hopefully they bought lots of popcorn.
