I agree.

I had my suspicions but didn't realize how far down that slope they'd slid. Awful.

YUP. But most experts laugh at the notion that quakes effect one another etc. or even that they have much to do with volcanoes.

We shall see.

IF the "stingy" U.S......

That remark, by Mr.Jan Egeland, under secretary-general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief for the U.N., has caused my wallet to slam shut. I am sorry for these people, I am sorrier still that their "collective" spokesman considers the US to be "stingy".

I will pray, but not pay.

Any event affects other events. The earth is a living thing and man can do little to affect it. Global Warming as presented by Junk Scientists shows the vanity of mankind. We are gnats in the scheme of things.

For a small fraction of the cost of its nuclear and missile defense systems India could have implemented a useful tsunami early warning system.

And in doing so, perhaps, sacrificed India's deterrent to the very real threat of the Muslim and communist nations to India's North. You pay's your money and you takes your chances, both as an individual and as a nation, with both man and Nature.

Thankfully, humans are God's favorit gnats.

...."But virtually any NGO has some at least tangential contact with the United Nations"....

Agreed. At least if you want to get anything done by your organization. This type of disaster seems to me to be what the United Nations is for - to help handle logistics between different countries, organizations etc. ("What - I thought YOU brought the can opener".)

Many of the areas are war-torn and I worry about the folks in power getting the bulk of the aid and profiting from it.

You're right - I'd definitely NOT give money to World Vision.

Although 8+ quakes are rare, its not significant that two ocurred in the last 30 days. Having worked as a seismologist for 20+ years, these things happen all the time, but when they are in unpopulated areas (like the Macquarie Islands or Sandwich Islands) or are very deep within the Earth's crust, no one hears about it.

The world has certainly been going increasingly nuts by orders of magnitude as long as I've been observing.

The world is actually more peaceful now than it has been in many decades, and relative to population, may right now be more peaceful than it's been in its entire history.

Franklin Graham's SAMARITAN'S PURSE is another high integrity, low overhead aid org.

Quix, thank you for recommending this honorable organization. My family sends a shoebox gift every year through their program that delivers the boxes to children across the world. I have just been grieved that this dear little girl I shopped for and prayed for may have been struck by this disaster. There is no way of knowing, of course, but this nagging fear has put a personal stamp on this massive epic event. I am praying for little "Shoe-shoe" and her family.

(By the way, are you sleeping? You are always online....)

The amount of dead will rise SIGNIFICANTLY in the coming days and weeks, as those who have survived so far succomb for related reasons. The horror is just beginning.

All this is truly ghastly, and they all have my most sincere prayers.

Prayers for Shoe Shoe!

LOL.

Most of my life--oddly, even half my Navy time--I've been able to work when I was awake and sleep when I was sleepy. I also have chronic sinus troubles that tend to clog my breathing about the middle of the night at least half the time. I will tend to pray for a while. If I'm still awake, I'll likely get up and FREEP etc.

When I get sleepy, I go back for the 2nd 3-5 hour jump. I tend to get enough sleep. It's just in 2-3 jumps. Have always considered it a freedom and not a problem.

THANKS MUCH for your concern and perceptiveness.

I think I've run into that perception/perspective before.

It's not mine.

I suspect we have different sensors that are extra alert as well as different criteria.
