nano-lubricant could mean no more oil changes

Imagine buying a new car and driving it for 10 years without once taking it for an oil-and-lube job. The engine won't even have a dipstick to check the oil. That's what the future holds if Rehovot-based ApNano Materials succeeds in marketing NanoLub.
NanoLub is the world's first synthetic lubricant to be based on spherical inorganic nanoparticles. As with other lubricants, its job is to reduce wear and friction between moving objects (like engine parts), enabling longer operation and higher efficiency. NanoLub dramatically outperforms every known commercial solid lubricant marketed today.
As its creator, ApNano Materials has just been selected by the US investing journal Red Herring as one of the top 100 innovators that will drive global markets in 2005.

Inorganic compounds are relatively indestructible by heat as compared with organic molecules.
They have more stable bonds.

OK, just as long as it doesn't self-replicate.

You'd still have to change the oil. The loss of viscosity isn't the only reason you change your oil. You also change it because byproducts of combustion accumulate in the oil and need to be removed periodically. This new super-syn would do nothing to change that.

You do legitimately have to change your "PCV" and EGR valves periodically. reminder bump

Quaker State just hired a team of assassins to go blow this lab up and kill the scientist and burn the building to the ground after shredding all the formulas and notes no doubt !!

I change my oil and filter every 3,000 miles, and have done so for as long as I've owned automobiles. So did I, until about ten years ago, when I read that every major car rental company changes the oil in their cars every 5,000 miles.
I now observe that mileage counter, with no ill effects. Still get 140,000 or so miles out of a car before I get tired of it.

If this article is true, it should also greatly enhace gas mileage too, as it will cut down on engine friction.

The engine won't even have a dipstick to check the oil.It may not need a dipstick, but if it is a GM car, it will need a fill tube to add a quart every month or so.

here's an article from tech magazine Red Herring on this subject:
Nanotech startups slippery slope:
"ApNanos promising lubricant could give it a key foothold in the burgeoning market. But its got major roadblocks namely, ChevronTexaco, ExxonMobil, and Shell."

I change my oil and filter every 3,000 miles, and have done so for as long as I've owned automobiles.Scheduled maintenance in my Freelander is to change the oil every 12,000 miles.
To: Pete'sWife
I change my oil and filter every 3,000 milesThis can't hurt. I go 3333 miles on each change. That's 3 every 10,000 miles, so it's easy to remember on the odometer 3333, 6666, and 9999. Most of the people in the industry will admit that for average service every 5000 miles is just fine, but always use first quality oil, no recycled crud.
