Who determines the norm???? Some people need high doses of Vitamin C for healing their bodies -- for instance I used to have a tendency to get strep throat... none of the antibiotics helped -- (talk about what needs major limitations on use -- it's antibiotics) finally in desperation I took C until I saturated my tissues (you know when you do because you get diarrhea) then backed off to maintenance dose -- I rid my body of the strep and haven't had it since.

Now when I feel a cold coming on I reach for lozenges that are made of elderberry, zinc, echinechia, goldenseal and C -- it can keep you from getting one, but it you don't start in time and do get a cold will cut it to a couple of days vs a week or more...

In otherwords, in a Capitalistic Society where days of work lost to illness costs this country a lot of money -- that money could be saved if people understood and took supplements when required. Many are specific to certain situations and there isn't enough time or space here to spell them all out -- just suffice it to say the daily required minimums are enough to sustain life -- not good health.

and don't forget MOST doctors know how to prescribe drugs and know little or nothing about vitamins, herbs and homeopathy and what helps what in the face of illness. Doctors receive a rediculously small amount of training in nutrition when they are in school.... vitamins "can" cure, prescriptions begat prescriptions -- if you were a doctor which would you recommend? the drug that will bring the patient back time and time again or the vitamin that will make them well and no longer in need of a doctor?

oh, goodie -- for people who can hardly swallow pills if you can only purchase vitamin c at 50 mg and need 1000mg an hour that is comforting (not).

Exactly -- everyone you know needs to write to their representatives telling them this amounts to prohibition. To take something that can aid our health away while leaving the FDA to okay drugs that can kill or people allowed to use alcohol and cigarettes which definitely do harm to the body is not something we elected them for.

Thought this was worth the read:
http://www.mercola.com/2004/dec/25/doctors_drugs.htm

More mess from Doctor prescribed drugs than from any of the health food type things out on the market.

Reason? Greed and politics go hand in hand. All you have to know is how persons cycle in and out of government to Big Pharma in a never ending circle in which they earn a GREAT DEAL of money while they are "working" at Big Pharma.

I live "inside the beltway". It isn't news here.

I think that the Codex predated the WTO.

Gonna look around and see.

According to this, the Codex is a creation of WHO/WFO.

Doesn't improve my opinion of it one bit, though.

The fact is, many people are harming their health partly because these supplements aren't regulated and put through rigarous examination before being placed in the market.

Freedom is messy and the number of people harmed is statiscally nil.

Now, I don't support banning any sort of drug or supplement, but in this country where people obviously can't be trusted to make their own decision concerning alcohol, drugs, and now apparently supplements, these sort of controls are best.

What's the difference between "controls" which you support and "banning" which you don't support.

oh, and before i get flamed... look at statistics on drug usage, teen pregnancy, alcoholism, and even average age of 1st intercourse in, say, the Netherlands. Does anyone really think that liberal drug, alchol, & social policy in the US help?

Nothing liberal about trusting the free market and allowing people to live with the consequences of their choices, unless by liberal you mean classic liberalism.

Bottom line is the supplement industry was freed in 1994 back when we elected people who cared about freedom. And I for one do not need big brother to tell me what to injest and not injest. I chose to injest several supplements including a multi-vitamin with very large doses, which I credit with keeping me free from my yearly colds and such for over 4 years.

Euro control freaks.

They'll probably have the nerve to act surprised when their heads start rolling off of 21st Century guillotines.

I've been a follower of Doctor Mercola for a long time. He is a very sensible physician.

I know a lot of Canadians are getting very concerned that they will be implemented this summer... At this rate we're going to be the last people standing who have any rights remaining and we have to fight like heck to keep them!!!!

More like 7th century scimitars.
