It's Rumsfeld's fault.

Thailand was in the process of setting up one of these warning systems. It was implimented in part of Thailand, but not yet operational in the part of Thailand that was hit.

Nope, it's Bush's fault.

Because of his ties to Halliburton

"They had no tidal gauges and they had no warning," said Waverly Person, a geophysicist at the National Earthquake Information Center. . . .

Ironic Name Award.

Yes, the quake was triggered by a multi-megaton blast deep below the ocean floor...Rummy snuck out there after his Iraq vist, set the thing off, hoping to draw attention from the press --- Bush had to be behind the plot as well.

Wonder why we haven't heard that story from Dan Rather on C-BS???

A 9.0 earthquake in the sea was a huge clue.

An elaborate system was not needed in this case.

The tsunami warning system is apparently nonexistent in these countries. What's flawed is the mental function of all the educated tourists who figured it made sense to put on their bikinis and go play on the beach, at the edge of the ocean which just hosted one of the largest earthquakes in a century!

I'd say none of them were aware there had been one of the largest quakes of the century under the Indian Ocean.

When you go to the beach do you sit there with a laptop constantly refreshing the USGS NEIC website?

Typical 20/20 hindsight used to lay blame..
Let the author document his/her attempts to implement warning systems in the area, otherwise shut the hell up..

I found it interesting that there was also a (7.9 ? 8.1 ? ) earthquake in Antarctica just last week.. also about 6 to 8 miles deep..
The scientists based there slept right through it.. I understand the native penguins were "nonplussed, but committed to carrying on with planned fishing and egg-laying events"..

Uggh let me reformat..

The tsunami hit Phuket an hour after the quake. It hit Sri Lanka 1 1/2 hours after the quake.

When you go to the beach do you sit there with a wireless laptop constantly refreshing the USGS NEIC website?

According to Drudge there has not been a tsunami in the Indian Ocean since Krakatoa blew up in 1883.How does one plan for an event that has not happened in 121 years? It's like saying Victoria Texas should have has plows and salt trucks because it snowed there again on Christmas, just like it did in 1918.
