The east coast of Africa was hit as well - so it headed that way. Not much information on that part of it. Let's hope that it just rippled on by.
Looks to be somewhat in harm's way. Prayers for all who are suffering.
Could they have been scrambled in time? I haven't heard yet how much warning there may have been of incoming tidal waves.
Diego Garcia has been through this before.

An Official Report by the PPDRDG Ministry of History and Propaganda:
On November 30, 1983, at 21:46 local time, an earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter Scale hit Diego Garcia.
It lasted 142 seconds.
For those of you who weren't there on November 30, 1983,
you can now re-live the experience of the
Great Diego Garcia Earthquake!
The Survivors Remember those TerribleTimes:
I have heard of no early warning system in the Indian Ocean for an event like this. Everyone was taken by surprise. Not sure what the base had for early detection, or if they had warning prior to being hit. Sunbathers, joggers, and snorkelers were out enjoying the day when - WHAM.
Correct, it shouldn't be able to build up, but should just work around the island, but I wouldn't go out on the beach with a serf board just in case.
Your post makes alot of sense. But....even if DG is in deep water, wouldn't the land itself offer resistance?
Let's see. An average nuke would carry, say, 100 kilotons TNT equivalent explosive power. 3 billion tons would be 3 million kilotons. Pardon a moment while I find my TI Business Analyst calculator. That would be equivalent to 30,000 nukes, which happens to be roughly as many as there are. Yep, that's the business all right.
While you are imagining, imagine if it had been on the east side of Sumatra and the tsunami was unleashed into the S. China Sea. The way it was, at least the tsunami had to travel a relatively long distance before landfall.

They would have 6 hours to do something.
A special prayer for them and that they will all be found safe.

I believe DollyCali refers to another thread on the subject of this disaster, in which a poster noted that the dome of a mosque had reportedly collapsed as a result of the quake, and that he (the poster, who'll I'll not name) had "... prayed God would leave authentic [sic] churches standing and crash all the idol focused [presumably, houses of worship used by religions the poster does not approve of] temples in quakes in Asia."
Not Free Republic's finest moment.
Shoot him and put it on Fox News.
I suppose if they had enough lead time from Sri Lanka, they could pile most people aboard planes and take off, but they better have a good place to land. I can see the island just being swamped. A Richter 9.0 tsunami must a real big pile of water. If the direction was right the barrier reefs might have helped.
No, it is good to have the husband. You can always find another television if necessary.
Would that also be where Saddam and other choice prisoners reside??
I know the DoD does, I was talking about the media having that fact at their fingertips. Being a 3 day weekend and most staffs shorthanded, the press is more clueless than usual.
