The annual teen employment rate tumbled from 45% in 2000 to 37% last year lowest since the figure was first tracked in 1948.
Research shows that teen employment can lead to higher wages and employment in adulthood, especially for those who don't go on to four-year colleges.
Disadvantaged youths who work in high school are also less likely to drop out.
