I don't know why they are objecting. Bush should nominate someone younger. Someone who will be on the court longer then Scalia who is in his late 60's. If anything they should be grateful that Bush would nominate him for that reason.

And such discussions under the shield of Democrats moving away and keeping distance from abortion since this will prevent the party from gaining politically.

Pro abortionists: keep your party's needs on high.

Gandy of NOW may have a point, much as I admire Scalia, he has not been known to suffer fools gladly. Bit of history here, that could be a large part of why elevating an Associate Justice to Chief has been the exception rather than the rule. Rehnquist was the last Justice so elevated and Scalia was appointed Associate simutaneously. Prior to that, the last Associate Justice so promoted prior to Rehnquist was Harlan Stone in 1941. The last previous attempt was Abe Fortas who eventually stepped down before a vote when it became clear he would not prevail.
