MINNESOTA: Motorcyclist clocked at 205 mph pleads guilty

Associated Press

WABASHA, Minn. - The Minnesota motorcyclist accused of buzzing down a rural highway at 205 mph must complete nearly an hour of community service for every mile per hour authorities say he was going.

Sam Tilley, 20, pleaded guilty Wednesday to speeding and driving without a motorcycle license. He was sentenced to a year of probation and 200 hours of community service. Wabasha County Attorney Jim Nordstrom said he dropped a misdemeanor charge of reckless driving.

Tilley, who previously pleaded not guilty to the charges, decided against going to trial on charges that carried maximum penalties of 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Without a trial, Tilley and the State Patrol won't be able to make their case about how fast Tilley was actually going. In September, a state trooper flying above U.S. 61 in southeastern Minnesota used a stopwatch and road markings to clock Tilley going 205 mph in a 65-mph zone.

But motorcycle enthusiasts - and Tilley himself - said they doubted his Honda RC51 could move that fast. Tilley had his bike tested by a mechanic, who said it wouldn't exceed 159 mph.

Tilley wasn't talking about the guilty plea Wednesday and has given few interviews since the incident. The State Patrol didn't comment either.

Legal observers said while Tilley avoided jail time and fines, the community service requirement is far more than the 15 to 30 hours that even a first-time DUI offender often gets.

These bikes when tweaked run past 200 mph with ease. No question. That dude (?) was a good rider...wheelies at 100mph+ are not for sissies.

No way.....that guy is not doing 210+. I have done 150 in a BMW 528i going downhill. The speedometer is fixed.

why would someone "fake" something that the bike is capable of?

looked real to me and I've spent time at 150 plus on two-wheelers

"Many of us Harley riders can be boneheads (me included), and many like the 'mine's, bigger, better, faster than yours syndrome, but 200 mph or anywhere near it on a public road is just insane."

YUP

BTW, You can tweak anything that burns fossil fuels.

Newp. Sorry, but with reckless driving, we could have (and would have) added a whole lot more on. Sorry, my VC is not with me, but I would guestimate at least two or three more.

We don't have speed traps in my town.

"Whole lot of noise and vibration..."

Nothing more needs to be said...Can't beat the noise..You'll have to ask the passengers about the vibes...Call it a Harley "moment"

Two kinds of riders....Harley riders.....and those who wish they were.

Maybe Santa will be kind to you and bring you a traditional motorcycle.

I'm always being challenged to a race by the sport bikers, but no one will take me up on it when I agree....I always explain, as the challenged party, I get to set the course...It's always "Up the steepest mountain in the area, pulling a Chevy 3/4 ton truck."

That was a kooky video. He wheelied from 65 to 135 MPH. I used to be young and immortal myself. I could wheelie my 1985 CR500R for miles, often until the front wheel stopped spinning, or even reversed. I could even wheelie with one hand, or my knees on the seat. That CR would go maybe 85 flat out, being a dirt bike and all, but most of my wheelying was under 70 ...

Even being the manly-man that I am, I am not sure I want to wheelie to 135 or go 220MPH on a state highway.

I think the speedometer is marked in km/h, not MPH.

200 km/h = 124 MPH

Sound more reasonable?

with reckless driving, we could have (and would have) added a whole lot more on.

Sorry, you can't add violations to the ticket after the fact. The speeding violation would be dismissed due to the anti-speed trap law. Without the speed being allowed as evidence ,the reckless driving charge would be difficult to prove in the absence of other evidence.

In Practice, what happens in CA is the air unit clocks you and then radios to a ground unit that makes the stop and says that he clocked you. The court knows better, but you are convicted anyway.

Reckless Driving 23103.
(a) Any person who drives any vehicle upon a highway in willful or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property is guilty of reckless driving.
(b) Any person who drives any vehicle in any offstreet parking facility, as defined in subdivision (c) of Section 12500, in willful or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property is guilty of reckless driving.
(c) Persons convicted of the offense of reckless driving shall be punished by imprisonment in a county jail for not less than five days nor more than 90 days or by a fine of not less than one hundred forty-five dollars ($145) nor more than one thousand dollars ($1,000), or by both that fine and imprisonment, except as provided in Section 23104

This code section may be found online, on the California Department of Motor Vehicles website,

>>>I have done 150 in a BMW 528i going downhill. <<<

In a 528?.....you sure "downhill" shouldn't read "off a cliff"?!

I had a pretty well tricked out 533.....and 150 wasn't in the books. Now my tricked out M6 - was a different story.....140 with lots of peddle left!

there is a kph ring on the inside of the speedo.

this cat is doing it....some of those bikes can do that easy....why fake it if the bike will do it.

not to mention the wheelie....how many folks pulling front air for that length and at that speed would be skeered of 200mph plus.

FR...always guaranteed to have a the nay-nays...gotta love it.

What are you talking about? No one has suggested doing this after the fact. Least of all, he could be charged with resisting arrest, which I promised you will bring at least one night in jail, at the bare minimum.

You don't know what you're talking about when it comes to estimating the speed, having it thrown out as evidence, that there must be some sort of magical 'speed trap' etc.... We don't use speed traps where I work.

Trust me, do it in Monterey County, CA and you'll be in the pokey.

"Maybe Santa will be kind to you and bring you a traditional motorcycle"

Thoughtful of you, but I'd prefer to have a really cherry Vincent Black Shadow or a Norton P-11 Scrambler for the same money Santa'd have to put on one of those overgrown Cushman motorscooters!

The whole Harley schtick requires too much of the tattoo/belly/tassles for me. If I'm going to have noise and vibration, I'll take the rumble of classic Brit iron or the song of a Ducati desmo...

Snortin' Norton...w/electrics by Lucas...Prince of Darkness..LOL

Had a Commando before joining the army..can understand a fondness for them, traded my Beezer and Thumper for it. however, IMO, nothing says motorcycle like a 45° V-twin.

There must be something to it, else the Japanese manufacturers would not be marketing American style cruisers.

Besides,on a Harley I get to ride with the ghosts...never felt like that on any other sled.

**** how many horsies do these tweaked ones do? ****

The GSXR 1100 I had with the mods cranked out about 130 to 135 HP max.

The turbo Busa, I was told, put out somewhere in the vicinity of 285 HP.

"205 is moving on. Some of the crotch rocket motorcycles will run 180 out of the box."

A guy I work with has a crotch rocket of some kind. He was told it would do in the low 190s. The fastest he had it was around 180 clocked by radar with no tweeking of any kind, before he backed off due to common sense setting in.
