CA: Governor's semi-candor
SFGate.com ^ | 12/24/04 | Op/Ed - SF Chronicle

GOV. Arnold Schwarzenegger finally answered the question of what he has been doing with his time.

Sort of.

Schwarzenegger this week made good on a promise to make public his official calendars, releasing his schedule for his first 379 days in office. It is believed to be the first time in California history that a governor has unveiled his appointment logs.

Still, there are limits to this governor's candor. There were considerable gaps of time in those schedules as well as an abundance of "private meetings."

Not surprisingly, the governor -- who campaigned on a pledge to improve the state's business climate -- has been spending quite a bit of time with corporate executives. There were fewer meetings with consumer groups -- some of which have complained openly about his lack of accessibility.

His appointment log was sometimes vague, such as its listing of meetings with "stakeholders" on the issues of transportation and workers' compensation.

The disclosures would have been far more insightful if Schwarzenegger had been willing to list the attendees.

Thanks for the post Norm.

To the writer...

Hit him for not cutting spending, which he hasn't. Hit him for the absolutely inexcusable land mattera this guy has screwed up royally, specificly the High Sierra land grab. Hit him for his support for leftist ideology, which he does exhibit.

Here he is hit below the belt in my opinion, and with stupifying logic. Where's the substance in this article?

He made good on his promise to make public his official calendars. It's the first time this has been done. The kudos he gets for having done so.... non-existant.

Complaints from consumer groups? Now there's a first. This is like blaming the governor because the sun comes up every morning. Consumer groups complain by nature, and are always saying they don't get enough face time.

I will agree that it would have been nice for him to list attendees, but nobody is going to do that. The guy has provided more than anyone else, and that should be noted in a positive fashion.

The guy has been in office for about a year. 52 Saturdays and Sundays = 104. Still it was deemed worthy enough to mention that Schwarzenegger didn't find it necessary to explain away his 104 private days... and oh yes, that includes weekends and holidays.

This is s sophmoric article.

How about more reporting on the issues that are important to vast regions of the state, like those who live in and around the High Sierra?

How about reporting on the abysmal condition of our state budget, the inexcusable spending levels that continue to grow this far into Schwarzenegger's tenure?

How about his calls for the republican party to forsake what makes them conservatives, and essential join the democrat party? Doesn't that merit at least five words on the subject?

In all fairness, the Governor has a penchant for private meetings.

Before he "decided" to run for Governor, he met privately with elites that are some of the big players in the world of global finance , he met with Ken Lay of Enron notoriety, .. I could go on, but then I might be seen as being out to make a point... or having a personal agenda.

Have a Merry Christmas and stand by for the upcoming lovefest in the legislature and state capital. :)

Norm. I agree with you on that point, but this article didn't seem to want to actually lay out reasons for the criticism. If they had done even as much as you did to reveal the problem, I'd have been much more receptive to the analysis. On top of that, the inclusion of silly stuff undercut any valid concerns one might have for the very issue you target. IMO

Tell you what Norm, I'll bet you and I would agree that not only should names be made public on these meetings, but that transcripts should be made available as well.

I don't think that's going to happen though. And taking this guy to task when Davis almost certainly did the same things, kindof bothers me.

It's sortof like, there were no homeless under Clinton or Carter, but Reagan and Bush have put them back on the streets.

It's a valid issue. It should have been a valid issue since the state came into being. It should be addressed in an adult manner with serious designs to fix the problem, not as a side show in a carnival of silly ideas.

This isn't intended as a criticism of you at all.

Happy Holidays to you and your family Norm.

If you're serious, ping Sierra Wasp. He's the expert on this subject.

A new conservency covering millions of High Sierra acres was approved a few months back.

Sierr Wasp and a number of other people were angry about it, and quite right to be so. Include me among them.

I got over taking anything said at me or stuff I post too personally here at FR a long time ago. :-)

I agree that specifics about issues make for a more sound presentation of information. The source paper, Sf Chronicle has been less than above board in the past regardless of who was in office and likely, that won't change anytime soon.

I don't relish being the 'heavy' here, however, I will give no public office holder a pass for any reason, be it injurious to my own personal stances on issues or run the risk of hurting the view some may have of me.

The opportunities to hit the ground running to fix this state were passed over first time around in the name of being bipartisan and encouraging the other side to work for the common good of all in this state.

The problem with that is an excellent opportunity to toss some of these bums that ran this state into the weeds got a FRee pass from the very person who said he was for the people and not the special interests.

Just as it took extraordinary efforts to hide all the collusion that went on with behind the scenes influence peddling and wheeling and dealing, we now find ourselves in very much the same predicament as before the recall.. except , we have a much larger debt load... so I know you will forgive me if I continue fanning the flames under the Governor and all the legislators feet and local officals as well, both elected and otherwise.

It is obvious many in the media don't see a need to change how business is done in this state when it comes to the public's best interests rather than those specal interests that are still essentially influencing decisions that we all pay for and then wonder why.

The 'open gubamint' thing is a noble cause, but how many of us could really stomach what goes on when it comes right down to it; when the art of compromise and legislating and governing is revealed in its full being.

If he's like me, he doesn't write down the full list of attendees of all his meetings in his appointment book. So what he's published contains about the information I would expect to be in there. Doesn't look to me like he's particularly trying to be evasive.

Your concluding comments are reasoned. I would agree. And so that does sortof bring us back full circle. While we both want to know what goes on, I think we soemwhat understand why we don't.

I think by my post, you can see that I am willing today to hold Schwarzenegger responsible for what he has done. I was not inclined to join in the trashing of him before he had done anything.

Where are the people who trashed him for nothing last year, when he now has done plenty (or has not done plenty) that he could be trashed for?

It's time. I would agree with your stance of taking him to task. He deserves it.

We're all different.

Half-hearted efforts at promoting open government seem a limp attempt at best to re-instill public confidence in our government. But some things are just meant to be murky, I guess. ;-)

But in truth, he has aides that should have a very accurate guest list. That could be made public record.

The problem with this is, that when people see a name on a list, they think that person played a major role in the festivities. The real truth may be that they didn't even voice an opinion at the event.

That's why I suggested that transcripts would be a great addition to the understanding of what takes place.

Norm touched on this though, and I don't think he's off base to have said what he did.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply otherwise, regarding your concerns for property rights. I don't follow where people are, or what issues they support. In this instance I couldn't remember if you were a part of those "High Sierra" threads and just kidding me or not.

Refering you to Sierra Wasp was intended to not only get you the straight scoop, but to provide access to updates that I might not be privy to.

It seems both of us consider property rights to be one of the most fundamental in this nation.

Thanks for your inquirey.

Ping list please. Arnold the Australian may have Total Recall of other loyalties as he sells us out piece by piece to the UN/EU -- in CA if he can't do it from the White House. We must throw off the chains and tie government up with chains that secure our liberty and land.
