Democratic Leadership Rethinking Abortion
LA Times ^ | December 23, 2004 | Peter Wallsten and Mary Curtius

WASHINGTON — After long defining itself as an undisputed defender of abortion rights, the Democratic Party is suddenly locked in an internal struggle over whether to redefine its position to appeal to a broader array of voters.

The fight is a central theme of the contest to head the Democratic National Committee, particularly between two leading candidates: former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, who supports abortion rights, and former Indiana Rep. Tim Roemer, an abortion foe who argues that the party cannot rebound from its losses in the November election unless it shows more tolerance on one of society's most emotional conflicts.

Interest groups from the ACLU to the NAGS will continue to support Democrats as they realize that such reversal and change is sheer cosmetic surgery.

These special interest Gestapos ARE the democrat party. Everything else about this evil political entity is merely a complete public relations sham.

I thought they took an oath to do no harm, or some such thing...

The original oath forbid abortion.

Rush nailed this yesterday. They aren't CHANGING anything except the phrasing they use to defend abortion. Style, not substance. Good for them. Keep it up, Dems. You'll soon have as much power as the Know-Nothing Party.

They'll never give up their pro-abortion stance. They'll hide it, they'll cover it up, they'll even say they are re-thinking their attitude....Don't you believe it!!!

Pro-abortion and anti-Christian beliefs are the cornerstone of the Democratic party platform. They will fool some people, those who want to be fooled. I recognize their tune, and I ain't dancin' too it anymore.

Only so many core beliefs they can 'rethink' before they cease to be what they are.

The truly frightening fact is that the Democrats could moderate their stance on abortion and not lose many votes. They could become anti-immigration hawks, and abandon the homosexual lobby and not lose many votes. All of those stances would torque some special interest lobbies and cost them lots of cash but cash can be replaced. If the Democrats can ever get over the emotion of it and free themselves from the leadership of a handful of special interest beholden party leaders they could be a hugely dominant party. The gay voters, the immigrants, the abortion voters are almost all Democrats for a dozen other issues. They have no place to go. Some will stay home and not vote but most will accept the lesser evil argument and continue to vote Democrat. The Reagan (and GWB) Democrats would easily be swept back into their fold. The moderates the GOP has to bend over backwards for in both elections and legislation, the ones who are so enticed social programs "for the children" and free healthcare for all would fall easily to the democrats if the poison pills of abortion and homosexuality were gone. A Democrat party that abandons abortion, and homosexuality and runs as an America First, anti-big business, anti free trade, anti-illegal immigrant populist party could be a 60% party. Thank God they cannot figure it out.

You are correct. However the "Two-Party Cartel' has a lock the way it is. Don't Give The Sheeple A True Choice. Just imagine a 3rd party that provided for the people rather than some elitist non Americans. An example of this cartel is in So. Calif we had radio talk show hosts go after a pubbie (David Drier) for his illegal support stance. The idea was to vote him out & put the dem in this time who took the other side. Guess what? The dem party abandoned her. They were more interested in illegals flooding this nation than their own candidate. You tell me we don't have a elite run "Two-Party Cartel"? Only one way to change it. Vote all of them out.

The Democrats will never change their stance on murdering the unborn. They are only attempting to repackage themselves to appear to be more pro-life to fool America and get the votes.
