100+ Displaced After Explosion in High Rise (D.C. - 1/12/05)

Updated: Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005 - 11:45 AM

WASHINGTON - Investigators believe a build-up of natural gas is what led to the deadly blast and fire at an 11-story high rise in Southeast.

But they say they may never know exactly what led up to the explosion that left more than 100 people displaced Wednesday morning at the Marbury Plaza Apartments in the 2,300 block of Good Hope Road, SE.

"There was a tremendous explosion inside this building. It has obliterated three or four apartments. It has obliterated a laundry room," says D.C. Fire and EMS spokesman Alan Etter.

Officer Hit by Stolen Car Badly Injured at Pentagon (D.C. - 1/11/05)

ASSOCIATED PRESS A Pentagon police officer was fighting for his life after being run down by a stolen car, authorities said. Officer James Feltis, 41, was in very critical condition last night, Pentagon spokesman Glenn Flood said.

"He was on duty... and saw the vehicle coming the wrong way on what's known as Rotary Road. Apparently, he tried to stop the vehicle and was struck. He was thrown up in the air and came down to hit the back of the car, then hit the ground," Pentagon police Chief Richard Keevill said.

Alexandria Police Lt. John Crawford said the driver was moving at a "pretty good clip" when he hit Officer Feltis. The trouble began about 4 miles south of the Pentagon in Alexandria, on the fringes of Old Town, where city police said a 65-year-old Maryland man was getting into his 2002 Cadillac when a carjacker ordered him out. Alexandria police later found the car and chased it into Arlington County, then north onto Interstate 395. The driver got off at the Pentagon, where Officer Feltis was hit, but kept driving until an Alexandria police car rammed the Cadillac a short distance away.

"When the [Virginia] State Police, Pentagon police and Alexandria police attempted to arrest him, there was a scuffle, and the suspect got possession of the Alexandria officer's gun," said Amy Bertsch, an Alexandria police spokeswoman. "And the suspect fired multiple shots and injured himself."

Police were still trying to confirm the suspect's identity late yesterday. His injuries are not considered life-threatening. The man who was carjacked was taken to the hospital as a precaution but was not seriously hurt, authorities said.

Three Commercial Vans Stolen in Eureka Overnight (CA - 1/12/05)

Three commercial vans were stolen in Eureka last night. The Eureka Police Department said that after 5 p.m. yesterday, a Federal Express van was stolen from the company’s parking lot in Eureka.

At 3 a.m. today, the EPD responded to the 2900 block of H Street to a report of a hit-and-run that involved the stolen vehicle. Police said they believe the van’s driver, before driving away, apparently couldn’t miss a parked car and drove the van into it.

Two other commercial vans were also stolen from the same area last night, but they were recovered early this morning. Police are still looking for the Fed Express van with a number of 208756. Its license plate number is 4Z30151.

Anyone who knows where the missing van is should contact the Eureka Police Department at (707) 441-4060.

re: FedEx Trucks Stolen. A couple of days ago, I saw something on the highway that struck me as very odd. I was passing a FedEx semi tractor with tandem trailers. On the rear trailer, in place of the license plate, was a handmade tag that said "Missing Plate #XXXXXX". I have seen cars with a similar tag, but never a semi, and certainly never a FedEx truck.
