FINDING HIDDEN NUKES
BY JIM WILSON
At precisely 0100 GMT on Sept. 22, 1979, an American satellite recorded an image that made intelligence analysts' blood run cold. Looking down over the Indian Ocean, sensors aboard a Vela satellite were momentarily overwhelmed by two closely spaced flashes of light. There was only one known explanation for this bizarre phenomenon. Someone had detonated a nuclear explosion.
The list of suspects quickly narrowed to the only two countries at the time that had the materials, expertise and motivation to build a nuclear weapon: South Africa and Israel. Both denied responsibility. After that the Vela Flash, as the occurrence came to be known, left the spotlight until, 14 years later, an alleged witness came forward with a possible solution.
His name was Dieter Gerhardt, and he was formerly a commodore in the South African navy. When the Vela Flash occurred, he was commander of the Simonstown Naval Base near Cape Town. In a February 1994 interview with Des Blow of the Johannesburg City Press, Gerhardt said the distinctive double flash was produced by Operation Phenix, an Israeli-South African nuclear test.

IRAQI, U.S. SOLDIERS ATTACKED BY INSURGENTS FIRING FROM MOSQUE
MOSUL, Iraq Soldiers of the Iraqi National Guard and Multi-National Forces came under attack while on a mission to deliver much needed supplies to a school in northern Iraq, Jan.11.
Soldiers of the 106th ING and the U.S.1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment came under attack during delivery of heaters and supplies to a school in Al Monsur. The troops were hit by a roadside bomb, and then were shot at by anti-Iraqi insurgents firing from the Saddam Mosque.
Three ING soldiers were killed and six others were wounded in the attack. The driver of the truck that was hit by the roadside bomb was killed, and according to a civilian reporter at the scene was the father of 10. The wounded were taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Firing from the mosque is a violation of the laws of war. Iraqi authorities have stated that those insurgents using a religious center as their headquarters or as a place to attack Iraqi Security Forces or Multi-National Forces will not be safe.
Iraqi Security Forces continue to work together with leaders and citizens of Iraq to make it a safe, prosperous, and democratic nation.

Ten Injured in Mall Explosion (Chicago - 1/12/05)
By Imran Vittachi and Nancy Ryan Tribune staff reporter Published January 13, 2005, 12:45 AM CST
Ten people were injured, three of them seriously, after an apparent natural-gas explosion Wednesday night at Ford City Mall on the city's Southwest Side that upended cars and left a 5-foot-deep, 70-foot-long crater in the parking lot.
The explosion in the mall's parking lot occurred at 8:30 p.m. as stores in the mall at 7601 S. Cicero Ave. were getting ready to close and shoppers were heading home. It caused nearby homes to shake and bits of asphalt and dust to rain down onto the parking lot, fire officials and witnesses said.
"I heard this big explosion, as if a plane had fallen," said Iradh Erusca, who lives near the mall. "It shook my house, and when I looked outside there was this white smoke."
Officials were not sure what caused the explosion late Wednesday. "We think it was a gas main," Fire Commissioner Cortez Trotter said at a news conference late Wednesday....
