ARTICLE SNIPPET: "WASHINGTON - Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz presented Army Cpl. Eli F. Cook with a Purple Heart Dec. 15 on his 23rd birthday.
After visiting war-wounded patients at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Wolfowitz joined the visitors in a special dining area during lunchtime to award Cook his medal.
Wolfowitz told the group that Cook, who was wounded in Afghanistan, helped make it possible for that country to hold democratic elections and elect a democratic president for the first time in that country's history.
Cook said he was an infantryman driving a Humvee gun truck with the 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division. The truck was hit by three rocked-propelled grenades, a mortar and a .50-caliber machine gun."

Al-Qaeda seeks toxins for biowarfare attack

THE international pursuit of Osama Bin Laden has not stopped his Al-Qaeda network from seeking to build weapons of mass destruction, senior US officials said last week. Recent intelligence indicates that the group is turning its attention to chemical and biological weapons.
Despite severe technical obstacles to the launch of terrorist biowarfare, Washington believes Bin Laden has become convinced that only a WMD attack would be sufficient punishment for the US-led invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq.
“The overwhelming bulk of the evidence we have is that their efforts are focused on biological and chemical weapons,” said John Bolton, undersecretary of state for arms control.
Intelligence services in Egypt and Israel confirmed that Al-Qaeda had stepped up its efforts to acquire toxic materials as a result of the war in Iraq.
“They will use it unless stopped,” concluded one intelligence report handed to Ariel Sharon, the Israeli prime minister, last November.
American concern has been magnified by a series of intelligence and other reports warning that rapid advances in biotechnology could be exploited by terrorist groups seeking lethal bioweapons. “The technology for bio and chem is comparatively so much easier that that’s where their efforts are concentrating,” Bolton added.
In a study entitled The Darker Bioweapons Future, a CIA panel concluded that artificially engineered biological agents could prove “worse than any disease known to man”. The report said: “The same science that may cure some of our worst diseases could create the world’s most frightening weapons.”
Experts believe Al-Qaeda still lacks the laboratory access and scientific skills to produce weapons. But some of the administration’s scientific advisers have warned that the necessary technology is rapidly spreading. Some of it is even taught at undergraduate level.
“It seems likely that, over a period between a few months and a few years, broadly skilled individuals equipped with modest laboratory equipment can develop biological weapons,” said Richard Danzig, a biowarfare consultant to the Pentagon.
Other US officials suspect Bin Laden may be planting his acolytes in university science departments in the same way that he sent the September 11 hijackers to US flying schools.
“This is a guy who thinks long-term,” said one senior Washington source. “We have to learn to think like him.”
Suspicion that Bin Laden is increasingly focusing on WMD was heightened by reports last October that he had sought permission from a well-known Saudi Arabian theologian for an attack that would cause mass American casualties.
Bin Laden’s approach is said to have resulted in the publication of a religious decree entitled “Rules for the use of WMD against the infidels”. It was issued by Sheikh Nasser bin Hamad al-Fahd, who is currently under arrest in Riyadh.
Not all scientists believe a group such as Al-Qaeda will ever master biowarfare technologies. The main fear is that a rogue scientist may be prepared to sell his expertise.
“The people that I worry about are the lone operators, the scientist who is disgruntled, deranged or just bought off,” said Raymond Zilinskas, a Pentagon biowarfare consultant at the California-based Centre for Non-proliferation Studies.
“The probability of you or I dying from a terrorist bioweapon is smaller than our being eaten by a shark, but that is not to say we shouldn’t worry about it.”
American and British intelligence agencies have already confirmed Al-Qaeda’s interest in chemical experiments. Training videos were found in Afghanistan indicating that enough cyanide had been produced to kill several dogs.
“Only a thin wall of terrorist ignorance and inexperience now protects us,” said Danzig.

Jan. 2 (UPI) -- Pyongyang warned the danger of nuclear war on the Korean peninsula is growing in a New Year's editorial published in North Korea's three major newspapers.
"The danger of a nuclear war is growing on the Korean peninsula as the days go by, owing to the U.S. moves to stifle the (North Korea)," the editorial said.
"All Koreans should stage a powerful struggle for peace against war in order to drive the U.S. troops out of South Korea, remove the very source of a nuclear war and defend the peace and security on the Korean peninsula."
The editorial contrasted with last year's message, making no mention of a need by the North for a nuclear deterrent, and called on the United States to end its hostile attitude toward North Korea, which U.S. President George Bush named to an "axis of evil" that also includes Iran and Iraq.
The United States and North Korea's neighbors are hoping North Korea will agree to restart talks on its nuclear activities in coming weeks, the Financial Times reported.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "A LEADING geologist repeatedly warned Indonesian officials that an earthquake and tsunami would soon strike their shores, it emerged this weekend.
Kerry Sieh, professor of geology at California Institute of Technology, has been studying the region for nearly a decade.
Last July he became so concerned at the likely massive loss of life that he printed and distributed 5,000 posters and brochures around some of the islands later hit by the earthquake.
He addressed church congregations and schools to tell people what to do in an earthquake. His main advice was for people to live away from shorelines.
Sieh had been due to meet Indonesian officials last month to discuss a wider education programme but the meeting was cancelled at the last minute because the officials said they had no money."
There were some on another thread last week questioning why we were sending Marines as part of our support for the recovery. This is partially why.

Lase targets Airlines in Nashville

Just reported: An airline on approach to the Nashville airport has had it's cockpit targeted by a green laser. The plane was about 6 miles out and at 3000 feet when the incident occurred. The plane landed safely and no one was injured.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "ROME - A man struck Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi with a camera tripod Friday in a Rome piazza, giving him a slight bruise but no major injuries, his office said.
The premier's bodyguards and police quickly blocked the assailant after the attack in Piazza Navona, a large bustling square at the heart of the capital.
Police were questioning the assailant, who was a tourist from the northern town of Mantua, the ANSA news agency said.
Berlusconi, who had a slight bruise between his right ear and neck, saw a doctor as a precaution, the report said.
The prime minister was "saddened" by the attack, his office said, adding it had no information on the motive."
