Feinstein wants end to Electoral College Senator says she'll seek constitutional amendment
- Edward Epstein, Chronicle Washington Bureau Thursday, December 23, 2004
Washington -- Sen. Dianne Feinstein said Wednesday that when Congress returns in January, she will propose a constitutional amendment to abolish the Electoral College and replace it with a one-person, one-vote system for electing the nation's president and vice president.
.....
"The Electoral College is an anachronism, and the time has come to bring our democracy into the 21st century," Feinstein said in a statement.

Do you really want NY and CA deciding who the president is?
Awfully big word for such a small mind.
BS. The electoral college is still needed. It is the only way to have fair elections that represent all the states. What your saying is the same old tired argument that the constitution should "change with the times", which is just another way of doing away with it. We are a republic not a democracy, we do not have majority rule. We still need the electoral college.
Yes. The problem with one man = one vote is that the cities, who can manufacture votes at will would always dominate the election. Just ask the people of Washington if you need to understand how this works.
What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. May God have mercy on your soul.
Merry Christmas

The truth is that if you go for a one-man-one-vote concept...then you might as well forget about the Iowa/New Hampshire pre-runs...they will disappear within four years. You basically worry about the entire west coast, Texas, the south by itself, the iron-belt of Ohio/Michigan/Indiana/Chicago and New York. Everyone else, especially those from Idaho, North Dakota and Alaska...can foget about their significance in elections. If I were a major candidate...I'd pump every dollar in major urban areas and max out exposure as much as possible in the top 30 cities in America. It simply makes sense.
There is a reason why we went to the electoral college. If the good senator from california thinks getting rid of the electoral college is a good idea...then we ought to think the same about the senate...because its the same problem and same issue. We don't really need a Senate if the house does the job they are suppose to. We can save over $300 million a year by cutting out the Senate. I'd be in favor of that.
The 50 states would become mere zones on a national map.
difi.
this has been on the wish list of lefists since at least the late sixites.
i had a college instructor from berkeley who wanted "one person, one vote".
The electoral college is part of the basis for a union of states rather than a homogenized federal republic. So, I take it you are against states' rights as well?
Read Madison's Journal.
I agree with you. Eliminating the electoral college changes the nature of the union; it would further erode the notion of being a union of states.
I don't think its going to happen. Barring some abuse of the electoral college system that everyone agrees is an abuse, there is no reason and no support to change it. The fact that you can lose the popular election and win the electoral count is not an abuse, it is a circumstance that cuts both ways and could favor one party as easily as another. (Its a "feature", not a "bug").
If Bush had won the popular vote, and lost the electoral count, I would be as annoyed as the Dems have been these last few years, especially if the beneficiary were someone like Kerry or Gore (or Clinton II). But being annoyed is not sufficient reason to change it.
How about a constitutional amendment that would stop people on the public dole from voting?
People like the lady down the street with all her Kerry signs. Here in the Gay Area, in addition to all the old line Liberals there are all these relative newcomers, typically relos from long standing Lib areas of the NE, who add to the problem. Then there are all the freaks. Used to be that 1/2 or more of us Californians were conservatives but those days have withered away. And Arnie thinks the GOP should move left? Get out man! I ain't moving Left. Any move I make will be a location move, out of the formerly-Golden State.
How's this?
I don't see anything about that in there.
Why does "DipStick" come to mind?
Sad to see supposed "conservatives" such as yourself who just don't get it. Or, are you? Are you a conservative?
No, Californians elected her!
