Activism:Parents television Council
Brent Bozell, Parents Television Council ^ | 12-23-04 | CoolrayD

Posted on 12/23/2004 6:56:14 AM PST by CoolRayD

Concerned friends & offended parents: Please visit parentstv.org & watch the most offensive TV Clip of the week. I was sickened & stunned by what Television is getting away with these days. We all know NO MEDIA OUTLET will help Americans with decency defend our children, so, I thought I'd use this Forum to help spread the word. The group was started by Brent Bozell, who many of you may know from The Media reasearch Center. A true under the radar warrior for Conservative values. I am new to this web site....Thanks for your time.

90% of the complaints to the FCC are from these nuts. It's people like these guys that scare many normal people away from the Republican party.

Here is a brand new invention, these guys should use it if they don't like what's on a channel

Yeah, there was a thread on this group a couple weeks ago. If it were up to them, all we could watch would be Reba and Highway to Heaven.

I have found my remote to be the most effective tool in controlling what I watch and don't watch.

Looks like a clip from Nip/Tuck, an FX show which carries a "TV MA" warning at the very beginning and is on later in the evening: 10pm EST. Combine this, a remote control, and a sense of parental responsibility, and there should be no problem.

It's actually one of my favorite shows, and if watched with an open mind, provides a lot of insight into the problems associated with plastic surgery. Yes, it's fiction, but the stories aren't that far-fetched in today's society: vanity, adultery, divorce, forgiveness, self-image problems, drugs, crime, etc.

"A true under the radar warrior for Conservative values."

Conservative values? I'm trying to figure out where in my conservative values it says that when I don't like something on TV, I should complain to an unconstitutional (in its current primary role) government agency to demand they take unconstitutional, illegal actions which undermine the free market, as opposed to simply flipping the channel.

"Looks like a clip from Nip/Tuck, an FX show"

That's odd, when did 'FX' set up a broadcast antenna and start broadcasting over the open airwaves? Or is it still a channel that one must pay to receive? As bad as the FCC's censorship is with broadcast TV, it truly makes no sense on cable. You can't sit a TV in your house, plug it into the electrical outlet, and see this stuff. You have to contact a cable provider, ask them to come install the equipment, and then pay them to receive all these channels. This isn't something you can do accidentally, and that's supposedly the standard applied.

DID YOU PREVIEW THE SOUTH PARK CLIP OF THE WEEK?
& RATHER THAN ATTACK ME PERHAPS YOU COUYLD SIMPLY FOLLOW YOUR OWN ADVICE & USE "IGNORE"?
I AM SIMPLY TRYING TO DO SOMETHING TO AT LEAST BRING ATTENTION TO THE ASSAULT ON OUR CHILDREN IN THE SECULAR LEFT TV PROGRAMING. MY INTENT IS NOT TO TAKE ANYTHING AWAY FROM YOU. WHY SO NASTY?

First of all, using all caps generally denotes yelling. It's not necessary.

"DID YOU PREVIEW THE SOUTH PARK CLIP OF THE WEEK?"

No, I did not. I've watched South Park a bit, and it's rather funny in my opinion. You might have a different opinion. That's fine, since no one is forcing either of us to watch it. As it happens, the creators of South Park are both pretty conservative. It's amusing when they're attacked from the 'right'.

"RATHER THAN ATTACK ME"

That's rather silly. I've not attacked you personally, but rather anyone and everyone who takes their complaint to Big Daddy government instead of their channel changer or the company actually creating or distributing the content.

"YOU COUYLD SIMPLY FOLLOW YOUR OWN ADVICE & USE "IGNORE"?"

If your positions on the issue are unable to stand up to one-paragraph criticisms, perhaps those positions should be re-evaluated.

"THE ASSAULT ON OUR CHILDREN"

The moment I hear it's for the chiiillldren, I tune out. Why? Because I know whatever's coming next is going to be an emotionally-biased attack on the free market and/or the Constitutionally-protected rights of myself or others.

"SECULAR LEFT TV PROGRAMING."

If it's that bad, then perhaps it's time to sell the TV in the newspaper and save $50 a month on that cable subscription. Books are indeed still available.

"MY INTENT IS NOT TO TAKE ANYTHING AWAY FROM YOU."

Yes, it is. Your intent is to remove, via government action, the choices available to me for entertainment via the free market. Seeing PAXTV-style programming on every cable channel would have me cancel my already rarely used cable service in a hurry. Using Big Guv to make that happen is wrong and it's anti-capitalist. The only places I can think of where government has that much control over television are Cuba, China, and North Korea. I don't know about you, but none of those places are terribly appealing to me.

"WHY SO NASTY?"

My arguments have been calm and reasoned. I don't get 'nasty' on forums like this; it's just not worth it.

Thank you for the heads up on ALL CAPS.
It is clear you want to fight with me
This is my last response to your screen name.
I repeat, my intent is to simply make ANY WHO ARE INTRESTED aware that there is a place they can go to make a difference. Your intent seems to be to vent your own personal anger against me, because I do not agree with you. I am new to Free Republic & still learning the ropes.
Thanks for such a friendly welcome.

Ditto to your Post 11. We're very careful about what is on TV in our house, and that's the way I like it: responsible adults control our TV, not the Left, not the Right, not the Government. Legislating responsibility or morality is a very slippery slope.

Hmm, let me think- do I send money to a nut like Bozell, or do I simply fulfill my duty as a parent and bar my children from watching offensive programs? I don't need an organization to be my paid selector of what I do and don't watch, thank you.

"It is clear you want to fight with me"

Disagreeing with someone is not the same as wanting 'to fight' with that person.

"I repeat, my intent is to simply make ANY WHO ARE INTRESTED aware that there is a place they can go to make a difference."

The moment people hear that 99%+ of the complaints are coming from one group, that group becomes instantly marginalized as a group of crazy folks. Should there indeed be a change effected, the inevitable backlash will bring about the most lax standards in television history.

"Your intent seems to be to vent your own personal anger against me"

My intent is to comment to something said on a forum; nothing more or less. If you understood this to be my intent, then my intent was misunderstood.

"Thanks for such a friendly welcome."

Welcome to FreeRepublic. I'm sorry that your first posting was met with critisism, but I'm not going to back down on what I believe just to make someone feel better. If this group really wants to make a difference, it should stop calling the FCC and start contacting cable companies and actual content distributors regarding what's seen on TV. Going through the FCC makes the group appear to be rabid Puritan statists intent on getting Orwellian governmental controls over all entertainment mediums enacted as soon as possible so as to purge any and all possibly objectionable material from the country. Going to the cable companies and content distributors instead of the FCC makes your complaints heard and allows the free market to work its magic free of government interference. The FCC was meant to help manage the broadcast spectrums; not to act as an Iranian-style government censorship board.

Parental responsibility breeds responsible and self-reliant children. Parents who rely on the government to raise their children for them end up with kids who develop a lifelong dependency on the government.

You forgot The 700 Club as well....

Brent Bozell is a nut, plain and simple. He is, as NJ_Gent suggests, using a government agency to censor things unconstitutionally.
