Queen's special message to troops

The Queen has recorded a special Christmas message for British troops, Buckingham Palace has revealed.

The palace said the radio recording would send a message of support and gratitude to troops and their families.

It is believed to be the first time in the Queen's 52-year reign that such a message has been made.

The palace said the traditional Christmas message, aired at 1500GMT on Saturday, would focus on "tolerance and respect in a changing world".

Troops stationed as far apart as Iraq, Germany and Brunei will be able to hear the special message broadcast on BFBS radio, the palace said.

Those stationed in the UK will also be able to tune in with their families.

Last month, the MoD announced it was sending a gift box to all British troops serving overseas, something last done 90 years ago.

'Respect'

In her message last year, the Queen spoke of her "respect and admiration" for British troops, who had served "brilliantly" across the globe.

That speech was the first shot entirely on location and showed the Queen chatting to troops at an Army base in Windsor, Berkshire.

This year's traditional message was recorded last week in the Yellow Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace.

It will be broadcast on television and radio in the UK at 1500GMT on Saturday and will also be aired throughout the Commonwealth.

It will also be available on this website after its official broadcast.

The Sovereign addressing the Empire/Commonwealth on Christmas Day goes back many years. Last year's message was a clear show of support for the troops from their Commander in Chief; this extra message reinforces that support.

God save the Queen, and protect her troops in harm's way.

Her message last year was very nice. I'll have to make sure and catch this one.
