Army troops on Thursday shot dead a self-styled commander of pro-Pakistan Hizbul Mujahideen outfit in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir, official sources said.

On an intelligence report about the presence of a group of Hizbul terrorists, troops launched a seek and destroy operation in Tringa forest belt of Mahore tehsil in Udhampur district around 8.30 am on Thursday, they said.

During search of the area, an encounter took place between terrorists and troops, they said adding that one top terrorist was killed. The encounter was still going on.

The slain terrorist is codenamed Abu Usma, tehsil commander of HM, they said adding that one AK rifle, four magazines, one wireless set, seven grenades and two IEDs were recovered from him.

Troops also arrested one Bangladeshi national identified as Sudhama, when he was crossing over to Pakistan via International Border in Samba border belt of Jammu district on Wednesday.

I don't think this is the same Abu Usma who is spokesman for Lashkar-e-Taiba.

Udhampur is in the lower center of the map.

Something silly. I looked on the map and Udhampur has close proximity to a rail crossing at Jammu. I was thinking this in a strategic sense for the terrosist operations in Udhampur. Ran a Google search on Udhampur and found that officials are to dedicate a rail link between Udhampur and Jammu.

PM -to inaugurate Jammu-Udhampur rail line in January; Mangat
Jammu, Dec 22 (UNI) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would inaugurate the much delayed and prestigious Jammu-Udhampur Railway line in the first week of January.

Stating this deputy chief minister mangat ram sharma in his address on the last day of five-day mahautsav in Udhampur today, said that with the inauguration of rail service between Jammu and udhampur, a long pending demand of the people of the region would be fulfilled. The work on other rail links, especially the Katra-Reasi, Kara-qazigund and qazigund-baramulla, was in progress, he added.

Housing and Urban Development Minister Ghulam Hassan Mir, Minister of state for rural development Gharu Ram and Minister of state for youth services and sports Yogesh Sawhney were also present on the occasion.

A little more info:

A Hizb-ul-Mujahideen commander and a teenage girl were killed in two separate incidents in Doda and Udhampur districts of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday night, official sources said.

Acting on a tip-off, troops launched a search operation in Sherki forest belt in Doda district on Sunday during which an encounter took place at a terrorist hideout, they said, adding that a HM commander, Mohammad Hafiz, codenamed Danish alias Abu Usman of Kotli, Pakistan, was killed in the gunbattle.

An AK rifle, three magazines, a wireles set, walkman and radio set were among the items seized from the hideout, they said.

In another incident, terrorists raped and later tortured to death a Gujjar teenage girl from Hahakund area in Udhampur district on Sunday night.

The body was recovered from the forest area and the troops have launched a search operation in the area to track down those responsible for the act, the sources said.
