I think Patton had a genuine sense of theatre, and was playing a role in speeches such as this. Remember that he was a well educated member of the Virginia gentry who studied history and literature.
Of course, he could have taken all of the above seriously -- in which case he was a psycho.
My uncle was the oldest private in Pattons third Army. He was two weeks short of his 39th birthday when he was drafted. Infantry all the way, he was with the Third all the way until early 1945 when he froze his feet and spent the next year in and out of milkitary hospitals.
We need ONE politician to give a speech like this, just one single freaking politician.
Damn that was a awesome speech.
Agree on the speech...it makes me want to go buy the DVD.
As for the "feel like decking the next guy who looks at me cross-eyed"...agree there, too. Not in a malicious, looking-for-a-fight way, but ever since 9-11, I've been of the 'you don't want to (insert descriptive of choice) with me' mindset.
Too long, I've been mellow, willing to be passive, and walked on, and s--t on...no more. Sometimes I feel like David Banner, the old Hulk character. Mild mannered, until someone p***ed him off, and then it was "on".
As much as I like to live, I know that one day, sooner or later, death will come to me. I want to take a few of the bad guys with me, so others might have the chance for freedom...to live it, to enjoy it, and most of all, to work to maintain it.
