Could the United Nations Say 'Auf Wiedersehen'?
New York Sun ^ | 12/20/04 | MEGHAN CLYNE

If the United Nations fails to gain approvals to expand its headquarters in New York, will it be saying "Auf Wiedersehen"?

That's "goodbye" in German, and at least one source close to the U.N. expansion project said talk has "been in the air" for several months about the possibility of using Bonn as a site for some U.N. offices should approval be withheld from plans to erect a 35-story office building near the U.N. campus during renovations of the Secretariat.

A number of sources familiar with the United Nations said transfer of the General Assembly and other organs of the main body to Bonn is highly unlikely. And a former U.N. ambassador, Richard Holbrooke, said that if the headquarters of the world body were moved from New York the organization "would collapse."

Tell them Auf Wieder-bye-bye, and be done with them.

The United Nations' "founding fathers" put the world body in New York City for a reason, Mr. Holbrooke, who has long been considered a front-runner for appointment as secretary of state in a Democratic administration, said Thursday. "They understood completely that if the organization wasn't anchored physically in the U.S., it wouldn't have the U.S. support it needed to succeed," Mr. Holbrooke said.

"The headquarters has to stay in New York," he said.

I say: "The headquarters must therefore be moved out of New York in order to ease the exit of the United States out of the United Nations". :)

Richard Holbrooke, said that if the headquarters of the world body were moved from New York the organization "would collapse."

Then by all means lets move it. We need to find a way to encourage NYC to block this new building, just to see them pick up and move.

In fact lets move it to Saudi Arabia, and see how the liberal UN Lovers like it having to bow to Mecca 5 times a day.

We should serve the UN with a 30 day eviction notice and then auction off all of the prime real estate they are sitting on to the highest bidder. We don't even need to quit, we can just throw them out and not send an ambassador to their new location, sooner or later they will get the message.

If the UN expands to Bonn, it's just a matter of time before either the entire UN moves to Bonn, or it collapses.

I don't really give a damn what the UN does, just as long as the US severs all ties with it.

The UN is all about Europe (France and its former colonies) anyway.

Quite appropriate to move to Deutchland, though I'd suggest that Harare, Zimbabwe or somewhere in Bosnia, Rwanda the southern Sudan would be most appropriate.

Just revoke all the diplomatic immunity and stop the funding, then the thugs in the UN won't bother coming here.
Don't make it worth their while.

Throw them that, return the land to the Manhattan Indians, let them open a hotel & casino, let the city and state get a slice of the proceeds and lower the sales tax. Would be a great boost to the tourist economy.

"Roughly 5,500 people work at the Secretariat in Manhattan, while an additional 1,800"

Think about what 6,000 odd leeches do to the tight housing market in NY.

If we kick them out a HELL of a lot of economy contributing AMERICANS presently unable to find an apartment in NY would likely find one!
