DULUTH -- A Duluth hockey arena was destroyed and at least two people suffered minor injuries Sunday night after a Zamboni ice-resurfacing machine exploded during a broomball game, starting a major fire and sending players and spectators fleeing.

"It looked like the Zamboni doors flew off onto the ice," a player told KDLH-TV in Duluth, referring to the doors of the enclosure in which the Zamboni sat while waiting to go on to the ice. The explosion happened about 9:40 p.m. at Peterson Arena, 3501 Grand Av. in west Duluth.

The witness said the explosion started ceiling insulation on fire, and the building was quickly engulfed.

"There were people on the ice that got hit by the doors," the player told the television station. "We all just ran out of there. I think everybody got out."

The Zamboni family, who have long been the targets of RICO-related investigations, denied any involvement in this bombing, and deplore the actions of both the perpetrators and the media, which seeks to inflame anti-Italian sentiments.

Joe Buckley, the driver of the Zamboni, which resurfaces the ice, said he was sweeping up when the blast occurred.

Sleeper cell alert in Duluth. CODE RED. Zamboni dispatched. I knew this would happen, no doubt a reaction to Saddam's recent plea for all jihadists to unite and destroy America.

My guess ... "Rapid Fire." ; )

...There were about seven minutes left in the broomball game between the Rapid Fire and Budweiser teams when the blast occurred.

I was just in Duluth on a business trip. I tuned into sports radio expecting to hear about the Vikes and Packers. Instead all they could talk about was collegiate hockey. They were really into it.

What the heck were people doing on the ice when the Zamboni was resurfacing? No rink I have been to allows people to stay on the ice (probably for liability reasons), and they certainly don't resurface in the middle of a game. I guess they do thing different up in Bulldog country.

When I first read the headline, I mistook Zamboni for "Zambelli", the family famous for making fireworks. I thought fireworks had exploded and caused an arena to burn down.
