Torrents, Suprnova et all
The torrent community is in shock and awe today. Suprnova, internets most popular torrent tracker site is now permanently offline. Its owner, Sloncek isnt available for comment. The MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) had indicated a few days back that they were planning to go after Bittorrent sites because an increasing amount of movies, games and was being traded in torrent form.
TOPICS: Business/Economy; News/Current Events; Technical
KEYWORDS: suprnova; torrents
Ever since bittorrents.org, suprnova.org and other torrent sites have gone offline, related newsgroups, IRC networks are flooded with users and messages wondering what has happened. Downloading files in torrent form has increasingly become popular in 2004 as single sites do not need to host the actual files. They only provide directions to where the files are hosted (either on web servers or the computers of individuals.) The Register published an analysis on 18 Dec that stated "BitTorrent traffic made up 53 per cent of all P2P traffic in June 2004." It is safe to assume that Bittorrent had only increased its share of p2p traffic before the tracker sites were closed down.
Bittorrent sites around the globe have gone dark. A French torrent site is also offline due to the threat of raids from French police. Sources say that the raid threats were real and therefore these sites went offline voluntarily. Bittorrent tracker sites of movies and games that are online even now are trying to cope under heavy volumes of traffic. It is early to say if these sites are going to remain online after they are contacted by the MPAA.

SuprNova.com was a scam that used the .com to scam unsuspecting users into paying. The real site was a .org, which remained free.

suprnova.com was a scummy site. You want suprnova.org.
Bittorrent is cool for legal files like Linux isos and game patches but since every can see everyone else's IP address its foolish to use it for movies or the MPAA will call your ISP and get you cut off. I prefer a private Direct Connect hub.

Stick to Gnutella, I say...
Somebody will probably locate a server right in the middle of Palestinian territory or somewhere else even the worst of the RIAA and MPAA sharks are too chicken**** to go. It's happened before.

i was wondering, why don't people just host their sites in a country that doesn't give a damn?
Also, why don't they just leave us alone? it's not like i was willing to buy a movie for 20 I'm going to watch only once anyway. the absolute maximum of what I'm going to do is rent it and rip it on my own.

I have a feeling that the MPAA or whoever would put pressure on whichever country "that doesnt give a damn" to "give a damn". But I totally agree with your point, Im not gonna go spend like $20 to get a movie that Ill watch like once or twice, if I really like it, Ill just wait till it comes out on dvd, rent it than rip it. As far as Im concerned the MPAA can go to hell
