We're doomed if they sang that in school. Could it have been I Have A Little Dreidel?
On second thought, there is a song called Light the Candle that is often referred to as The Hanukkah Song.
W visiting Israel, November 1998
If that's the best they have to illustrate their holiday - that's sad....
Oh dreidel dreidel dreidel, I made it out of clay ...
What do you think our National Religion is?
Thank you! And Happy Hanukkah to all our Jewish FReepers.
He said atheism.
I believe the nation was founded on a belief in God, not a label like 'christianity'. I think the 'christianity' label just compartmentalizes people and separates them instead of unifying them under the One God.
No, don't worry -- that was just a funny song someone came out with a few years ago. I like the part, "O.J. Simpson -- not a Jew!" Upon which the audience in the recording breaks out in relieved, nervous laughter. The song is just a harmless joke.
The House of Judah is a subset of the whole House of Israel ping. It will make sense soon enough, why the nation of Israel in the land of Israel was named Israel (vs. say, Judah).
Ezekiel 37:21-22 And say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will take the children of Israel from among the heathen, whither they be gone, and will gather them on every side, and bring them into their own land: 22 And I will make them one nation in the land upon the mountains of Israel; and one king shall be king to them all: and they shall be no more two nations, neither shall they be divided into two kingdoms any more at all:
Jeremiah 31:8-10
8 Behold, I will bring them from the north country, and gather them from the coasts of the earth, and with them the blind and the lame, the woman with child and her that travaileth with child together: a great company shall return thither.
9 They shall come with weeping, and with supplications will I lead them: I will cause them to walk by the rivers of waters in a straight way, wherein they shall not stumble: for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn.
10 Hear the word of the LORD, O ye nations, and declare it in the isles afar off, and say, He that scattered Israel will gather him, and keep him, as a shepherd doth his flock.
Bump!! I love this, and I love Prager. He rocks.
Someone present at the White House described the event like this:
An intimate December 9 meeting between the president and 15 communal leaders featured 10 Orthodox rabbis, one Orthodox rebbetzin, four Reform rabbis and not one Conservative Jew.The 500-person White House Hanukkah party, held later that night, was choc-a-bloc with Orthodox Jews in beards, hats and yarmulkes, according to participants.
And the family of a Lubavitch chaplain stationed in Iraq had the honor of lighting the Hanukkah menorah at a White House candle-lighting ceremony.
I'm sorry to hear that they've banned Christmas at your child's school. That really isn't fair. Besides, it's not like Jews mind Christmas -- quite the opposite! I love the beautiful decorations and the music. I sang in a choir that had a reportoire of carols and church music. Beautiful stuff.
Humanism? Hardly. Humanism implies to me that 'anything' goes.

1st Session
H. J. RES. 104
IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES
March 6 (legislative day, FEBRUARY 6), 1991
Received
JOINT RESOLUTION
To designate March 26, 1991, as `Education Day, U.S.A.'.
Whereas Congress recognizes the historical tradition of ethical values and principles which are the basis of civilized society and upon which our great Nation was founded;
Whereas these ethical values and principles have been the bedrock of society from the dawn of civilization, when they were known as the Seven Noahide Laws;
Whereas without these ethical values and principles the edifice of civilization stands in serious peril of returning to chaos;
Whereas society is profoundly concerned with the recent weakening of these principles that has resulted in crises that beleaguer and threaten the fabric of civilized society;
Whereas the justified preoccupation with these crises must not let the citizens of this Nation lose sight of their responsibility to transmit these historical ethical values from our distinguished past to the generations of the future;
Whereas the Lubavitch movement has fostered and promoted these ethical values and principles throughout the world;
Whereas Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, leader of the Lubavitch movement, is universally respected and revered and his eighty-ninth birthday falls on March 26, 1991;
Whereas in tribute to this great spiritual leader, `the rebbe,' this, his ninetieth year will be seen as one of `education and giving,' the year in which we turn to education and charity to return the world to the moral and ethical values contained in the Seven Noahide Laws; and
Whereas this will be reflected in an international scroll of honor signed by the President of the United States and other heads of state: Now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That March 26, 1991, the start of the ninetieth year of Rabbi Menachem Schneerson, leader of the worldwide Lubavitch movement, is designated as `Education Day, U.S.A.'. The President is requested to issue a proclamation calling upon the people of the United States to observe such day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.
Passed the House of Representatives March 5, 1991.
