I think that confiscation is a just response, since someone will have to pay for the loss. If it's an "us or them" choice, who would you choose?
I don't think Christian ethics espouse an "us or them" mentality. Certainly, it's not what Jesus preached.
So in answer to your question, sometimes I'd choose us, and sometimes them, depending on who I thought was right in the particular circumstances.
Of course, you're free to feel differently. I only hope you don't call yourself a Christian.
