ITHACA, N.Y. A nationwide poll finds nearly half of all Americans believe the U-S government should restrict the civil liberties of Muslim Americans.
The survey -- conducted this fall by Cornell University -- found that 44 percent favored at least some restrictions, while 48 percent said civil liberties shouldn't be restricted in any way.
Twenty-seven percent of the 715 respondents supported requiring all Muslim-Americans to register where they lived -- and 29 percent thought agents should infiltrate Muslim civic and volunteer groups.
The poll also found Republicans and people who described themselves as highly religious were more likely to support curtailing Muslims' civil liberties than Democrats or people who are less religious.
The executive director of the Muslim American Society says the news is disturbing, but not surprising.
"Now it's the Muslims turn to win our hearts and minds. And they can begin by opening themselves up to review."
Point well taken, and I agree. No reason it shouldn't work both ways. Hopefully, it will. I'm just saying, in the short term, I want our work in Iraq to be done with as soon as possible, and I want it to be a success so that Iraq can be an example for the Muslim/Arab world. That is why I stress the notion of winning hearts and minds now. But yes, in the long term, Islam has some reaching out to do.
But where, FRiend, does any of that say that the Mongols were ever predominately anything but Buddhist? I am no proffessor, but I do know chinese, Tibetan and Mongol history at least at a well-studied amateur level. They got their Buddhism from Tibet and always liked the Tibetan people. Their Buddhism was, like that of the Tibetans, always tainted with a liberal dose of their old animism and shamanism, but they were and are Buddhist, of a sort. They always identified themselves that way after their first alliance with Tibet.
But this brings up an interesting point. If you consider the clasic texts of Buddhism, the Mongols were wrong in bahaving as they most often did. But, if you consider the classic texts of Islam, the Muslims are clearly right in their present day drive to crush all of human civilization nder the bloodthirsty, misogynistic heel of Islam.
It's all in the book, just as it was in Mein Kampf, but some things are so frightening that certain people would rather close their eyes and pretend until the simitar hisses down to close them permanently.
Does kinda make you wonder if they're trying to gage the level of protection afforded them by the "social contract," doesn't it?
I don't think anybody said Islam had a monopoly on VIOLENCE per se ~ just the terrorism.
Does that help?
The question we must answer is "is this a real Holy war or just a little jihad." I will say what I mean because to do otherwise would be...well, it would be Islamic..."
I think the odds are great that this is indeed a holy war...a war between the forces of Good (God) and the forces of evil (Satan)/
If that is the case, then the enemy is not just Islam...it is that thing behind it.
That is disgusting. I hope those three children will learn better, and not follow the close-minded mistakes of their parents.
And yet what can one do? I'd like to confront the parents and give them a good ripping--and if I knew who they were I would. I mentioned it to Emily's teacher and she said "I don't want to get involved". Nice. I am through with this school. She can stay out the year, but three muslim kids showing disrespect to American veterans is three too many. And to make things worse, I was walking my daughter to class and saw a burka clad woman escorting a FIVE YEAR OLD covered with a burka to the kindegarten class. I wanted to scream at her, how DARE you do that to a child! This is AMERICA, assimilate!
No, I won't allow my daughter to become used to this. Time to get out of Dodge..
thanks for letting me rant, Tex!
Unless each Muslim (here in America) will publically condemn Osama bin Ladin and alQaida, and be willing to publish his or her name and photo on the Internet stating so, then they should be considered a threat to this country and should be watched.
That might be harsh, but I believe that with nuclear weapons and smallpox now in the mix, we cannot take a chance.
For those who disagree, somehow I doubt we would have allowed Nazi's to practice openly after Germany declared war on the US in WWII. ( I realize there were Nazi sympathizers in the US, but that was BEFORE the war began).
Why do you say that? Not challenging you, I am truly curious.
Europeans never figured out how to assimilate foreigners without first selling them on the slave markets or turning them into peasants bound to the land.
Americans cracked the code that makes assimilation possible, and it's darned difficult to keep folks interested in doing it.
If anything, this is the big difference between us and them.
"But yes, in the long term, Islam has some reaching out to do."
Thanks, I'm cool with that. I'd like to get out of the Middle East, too. As long as our oil supplies are secure.
Geez,
Look, I never, not once, denied, that Muslims were not involved in conflicts, or many conflicts, it was the notion that they were the cause of MOST that I denied. I think for use to have an intellectually honest discussion, we should have our facts straight. Perhaps the use of the word MOST was a hyperbole, fine, I just want to clarify that it is not true. Now, it is different if you want to discuss MOST OF THE CONFLICTS THAT ARE OF CONCERN TO THE UNITED STATES. In that case, yes, most of the conflicts that are relevant to our strategic interests involve Muslims. Does that make you happy? If so, Merry Christmas!
You are full of crap. Turkey shut down 7 Christian radio stations and several churches calling them "offensive". We all heard how Indonesias president c blamed the jews for all the worlds ills. I worked with 13 muzzies around 9-11. 7 of them spouted their hatred of America and the Jews the others followed the koran and didnt take the sides of the infidels. They remained silent about their co-religionists and let the infidels argue with them. Their silence showed whose side they are on!!!! INTERN and DEPORT!!!!!!
Ditto.
remember evil is very clever...don't be fooled by it.
But don't be seduced by it...do not return its hate with hate.
When we return hatred with hatred, good (God) and we lose.
Kill it without malice.
Excellent point. Have you ever heard a denunciation by muslim leaders (or any member of the muslim community) of ANY terrorist act by islamic terrorists without a qualification as in "We deplore the killing of innocents, but..."
1) its Israel's fault
2) its US policy
3) its poverty
ad nauseum.
