The image of peaceful environmentalists tree-sitting or sign-waving is a romantic one. But it's a completely false notion in the case of the radical Earth Liberation Front, or ELF. According to the FBI, ELF the nation's largest domestic terrorist group along with sister organization, the Animal Liberation Front, have been responsible for more than $43 million in damage to scientists, universities, farmers, developers, government agencies and businesses in recent years.
Last week's arson attacks in a new community in suburban Maryland, south of Washington, DC have reminded us of the dangers of eco-terrorists. The arson attacks destroyed a dozen half-million dollar homes and damaged nearly 30 more.
In its decade of existence in the US, ELF has moved to the top of the list of groups sponsoring domestic terrorism. According the non-profit group, the National Memorial Institute for the Prevention of Terrorism, based in Oklahoma City, ELF and ALF were responsible for at least 13 of the 18 domestic terrorist acts committed in the US last year.
In recent years, the two groups have moved away from timber industry and animal rights protests in favor of targeting suburban sprawl. They've committed acts of increasing violence and destruction.
And PETA, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, has admitted to giving money to ELF and ALF causes and to members involved in violent crimes including firebombing. PETA has Federal tax-exempt status.
The global war on terrorism has focused primarily on acts inspired by extreme factions of Islam against Americans and western interests abroad. But the U.S. faces a domestic front in the war. One that is every bit as dangerous and destructive.
And that's the Point.
I'm Mark Hyman.
We have a law that says the funders of these terrorists are responsible for the damage. Time to enforce the law.
Definitely. The nut job Islams are still a major threat to this country, but at the same time these domestic terrorist groups MUST be stopped.
What's truly bass-ackwards is the amount of environmental damage they cause. There are real problems out there that demand human intervention: overstocked forests, weeds, and erosion problems that won't get fixed with these idiots in the way.
Nature won't get better on its own. Don't let radical environmentalists presume that they hold the moral high ground, because they don't. It's time to hold them accountable for the damage that they are doing.
It also looks like the guy they just arrested for the arson was NOT an eco-terrorist, but a security gurad at the site with a history of mental illness. . .
Why these eco-terrorists haven't been apprehended/indicted is even more interesting.
BTTT!!!!!!!
Or so they say.
"or so they say"
Dang, and I thought all the conspiracy types were DUmmies. . .
I'm just all but convinced that there were ties to the ELF.
