Netherlands: Man Scraps Plan to Name Daughter 'Jihad'

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) -- A Moroccan-Dutch man changed his decision to name his new daughter "Jihad" after officials at the Moroccan consulate objected, a spokeswoman for the city of Amsterdam said Thursday.

The name means "struggle" or "holy war" in Arabic and is not uncommon for either boys or girls in Muslim countries.

Amsterdam bureaucrats didn't object to the name when the baby girl was born on Nov. 27, city spokeswoman Johanna Padmos said, noting that more than 100 people are registered in Amsterdam with the first name "Jihad."

But when the city sent the girl's name to the Moroccan consulate to approve her dual citizenship, it asked the father pick a different name, Padmos said.

The name may be considered offensive by some in the Netherlands after the alleged killing in November of a Dutch filmmaker by an Islamic fundamentalist who called for jihad against non-Muslims.

A representative of the Moroccan consulate wasn't immediately available for comment.

"After Nov. 2, that name has become loaded," Padmos said. "The father didn't want to start his daughter off in life on the wrong foot."

Padmos declined to reveal the family's name or the daughter's new name.

You gotta be pretty sick to name your kid "war."

But then Islam is a Religion of Peace....

Stupid name, but definitely not the first time I've heard of people giving their kids stupid names.

Let's leave the celebrities out of it, since we know they're moronic, and just discuss what OTHERWISE PERFECTLY NORMAL PEOPLE name their children.

I have a field day on some threads mocking the names of the protagonists.

I once knew a guy named Mars . . . he's the Roman God of war.

Kinda like how 'Adolf' isn't so popular in Europe anymore.

OK but then Mars isn't a "common" name either.

Jihad apparently is.

WAit lets look at that again

The name MAY be considered offensive by some in the Netherlands after the alleged killing in November of a Dutch filmmaker by an Islamic fundamentalist who called for jihad against non-Muslims.

The name MAY be CONSIDERED OFFENSIVE by SOME,

you know, because a word that means holy war against Christians is really ambiguous

Jihad is just another name for Mein Kampf.

No suprise that 100 kids being named "Jihad" doesn't concern anyone over there...

"Awww kids. They blow up so fast. (sarcasm)"

Classic. and tragic. Not too many other religions sacrifice their own children....except the abortionist Religion of self-worship, of course....both are primitive evil cults....

"Stupid name, but definitely not the first time I've heard of people giving their kids stupid names."

Stupid and dangerous. Like naming a Christian kid, Crusade. You know some Muslim fanatic is going to take exception to a name like that and try to kill them eventually.

There are more than a few who will take exception to anyone named Jihad too. The way things are going, there will be even more of them in the future.
