Blunkett quits as home secretary

David Blunkett has quit as home secretary following a string of newspaper claims that he fast-tracked a visa for his ex-lover's nanny.

Mr Blunkett denies the claims but has faced increasing pressure in recent days from members of his own party.

His position became more uncertain after he criticised a string of Cabinet colleagues in a new biography.

The BBC's Mark Mardell said the withdrawal of support by Labour colleagues delivered the final blow.

Hurrah.

This man flew the red flag over Sheffield City Council, declared it a nuclear-free-zone, and twinned the city with somewhere in the Soviet Union. Then he suddenly morphed into a NewLabour type; though his style has been rather similar to that of a Soviet Commissar (i.e., typical of NewLabour).

I can't say I've been very bothered by his 'scandal', but that he has resigned is cause for glass of something to be raised in celebration.

He'll be able to spend more time with his illegitimate son.

Good show.

Hear! Hear! -- On the soviet commissar analagy. Not only, this one, ideologically quite the clone of the Christian-Serbia-destroying Neo-Axis/NATO charter-member, Turd-way Tiny Blair.

But also a thoroughly nasty and Narcissistic Personality Disorder-suffering piece of dirt insofar as his vulgar behavior vis-a-vis his so-called "mistress" and her sorry spawn and crapped-on cuckold are concerned.

Quite the flag-bearer, both of dead and decadent europe's squalidly-fasciSSocialistic offshore satellite state's headlong descent into post-modern, post-Christian, post basic decency, post-finesse, post-decorum, Soddom and Gomorrah-esque moral and intellectual decay -- and also of its rapid spiralling into third-world totalitarian irrelevency!

i think that was the idea...

politiclly i'm happy to see the back of him, he's the most illiberal home secretary outside of north korea and he doesn't seem to be too good at his job, personaly i feel very sorry for him, he's overcome blindness, an appalling childhood and being from south yorkshire to become the third most important politician in the UK, and he's lost his job because he appears to have suffered something of a breakdown following the ending of his relationship with this woman.

its very sad, but he did need to resign.

you don't half talk rubbish, don't you?

if you've come here looking for sympathy for serbs, you'll find it in the dictionary between shit and syphallis.

I see in this the revenge of Boris Johnson and the Spectator. There's no down side to this whoever comes next can't be worse.

charles clarke apparently, only marginally better.

i wonder what will happen to ID cards? they were blunketts big idea and only tony and he wanted them, everyone else in cabinet could hear that parcel ticking...

oh well, time to start the plotting against charlie - he hasn't done anything yet, but it saves time.

Since ID cards will be administered by Capita or EDS (thanks Ross Perot) you can rest assured that they will never get that together just like every other eye catching new labour initiative.

Swearing = Bad. Also, who appointed you High Holder of Free Republic's Values, that allows you to make such a broad statement? You should rephrase that to state that YOU have no sympathy for the Serbs. Others here may feel differently.

Have a nice day!

apologies, my remark was meant in the context that as this is british news and very few americans would know who blunkett is or what he does, this would be a thread populated mostly by brits.

that said, i think very few brits would have any sympathy with a serb nationalist/'pan-christian' veiwpoint - we don't condider people who starve cities and rape old women to be christian, regardless of what they do on a sunday morning.

and he started it....
