The University of Miami School of Medicine launched a bold new era today with the announcement of a historic $100 million gift from the family of the late Leonard Miller, a longtime South Florida businessman and philanthropist. In recognition of the biggest gift ever to the University of Miami, the School of Medicine will be renamed the Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine.

Miller Genuine Draft School of Medicine.
Then I do not see a problem with it since it is a private school. It would be nice to see this hapen more often as long as enough money is donated.
Funny, donate the money, get a big tax write-off, get a school named after you.
Ga Tech=Ted Turner School of Engineering Science (just think, the 1 billion dollars he donated to the UN a few years ago, he could have had 10 schools named after him)
U.M. is private. Florida and Florida State are state universities.
At least they left "university of Miami" in the logo. Maybe it will be sort of like the "Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago". Now on the other hand, my alma mater, Rutgers Medical School, changed to "University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey - Robert Wood Johnson School of Medicine". That was lots of fun to explain to several dozen different agencies.
You have heard of Georgia Tech. You have heard of West Point. You have heard of UCLA.
Those are geographic names and they conjure up a certain reverence because of their history and established reputations.
If you are a Georgia Tech graduate, that means something because because it has an established reputation and tradition.
So, as a Georgia Tech graduate, you wake up one morning and Georgia Tech has changed it's name to Miller Tech.
Do you still think no tradition is being sullied?
Make that: Miller Lite School of Medicine!
Nonsense. The Miller family is not hawking a product....
Fine. How about the changing the name of Georgia Tech to Miller Tech.
UM Medical School and the Jackson Memorial Hospital are among the finest in the nation...
I've got an extra $1,000 to donate this year, any schools out there that will change their name to my name? Hmmm?
My name in lights! I like that thought!
I guess I don't understand the importance of that as you do. Things change.
The name of Rosenstiel was associated with that school from the start.
It did not steal a name with a half century tradition and reputation. When you say that you studied at "the Rosenstiel", everyone in Marine Sciences knows where you everything they need to know just as when you say you went to medical school at "Stanford".
Is the entire University being renamed?
$100M is going to allow their medical school to compete with the big league schools. My school would put up Michael Jackson's name on it for that kind of money.
Old man Miller's name is guaranteed a place in the foreseeable future. Chances are, it'll roll off the tongue someday just as easily as Rosenstiel's or anyone else's does today. Good for him.
That's exactly the problem.
It has to do with history, established tradition and reputation and not whether it is a geographic name or an individual's name.
"Rutgers Medical School" means something. It means something in tradition, history and reputation.
When you say "University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey - Robert Wood Johnson School of Medicine", you have Credentials Committee secretaries making phone calls to find out if that is a real medical school or a Kinko's shop printing out fancy fake diplomas suitable for framing.
UM Medical School and the Jackson Memorial Hospital are among the finest in the nation...
Look at your first sentence and then look at your second sentence.
As you said, "UM Medical School and the Jackson Memorial Hospital are among the finest in the nation". I studied there and I worked countless hours in the medical trenches there and when they ask me the name of my medical school I can say "University of Miami".
The current graduates have lost that name and that reputation. They are not changing the name of the building but the name of the institution itself.
It is no longer "UM Medical School".
It is now "Miller Medical School".
Ever hear of it before this morning?
As far as the Medical School is concerned, it may as well be.
The Medical School will be referred to as the Miller Medical School. Even the logo will be a big blue and white "Miller".
If you want to know that it is associated with the Universisity of Miami, you will have to dig around in the fine print.
It's called "Prostitution".
Actually, you hit the nail right on the head with the stadium analogy.
They are not changing the name of the building.
They are changing the name of the institution. In effect, they are changing the name of the team.
The Miami Dolphins have played at the Orange Bowl, Joe Robbie Stadium and now Pro Player Stadium. However, they are still the Miami Dolphins.
An analogous situation would have been to change the name of the Miami Dolphins to the Huizenga Videos.
I am a local to that area, work in the area, and my place of work is affiliated with UM. No one here is up in arms over this, they think its great. The place will always be known as UM medical school, the official title will just change, but no one will be fooled or anything. I have read your other messages in this thread, and I DO think your concerns have some merit though. I just dont see anything here but happiness over the money, but then again, $100 million will buy alot of smiles I guess..
