What I suspect may be a gathering storm on President Bush's horizon in 2005 is a confluence of factors that will force on Washington a fundamental immigration reform -- one that will seek to genuinely secure our borders. This is something that up until now neither the Republican Party nor the Democratic Party has wanted...
Adding piquancy to this legislative challenge for President Bush and the Republican-controlled Congress is the entrance from stage right of Hillary R. Clinton, 2008 Democratic Presidential Nominee, presumptive.
In the last few weeks the ever cold-blooded Miss Hillary has started to stake out a position to the right of the Republican Party. Just listen to her Pat Buchananesque defiance: "[I do] not think that we have protected our borders or our ports ... we can do more and we can do batter?I am, you know, adamantly against illegal immigrants... Clearly we have to make some tough decisions as a country, and one of them ought to be coming up with a much better entry-and-exit system so that if we are going to let people in for... work...lets have system that keeps track of them... People have to stop employing illegal immigrants."
These are hardly idle pensees coming from The Iron Maiden of Chappaqua. Rather, it is a part, and a big part, of her calculated strategy to shed her liberal image and seize the White House from the Republicans in 2008 by attacking them on the most vulnerable part of their right flank: open borders, illegal immigration and lax anti-terrorist security.
I never thought I would write the following words, but: God bless Hillary Clinton. Though her motives are cynical, their effects may well be vital both to our national security and to our sovereign responsibility to control our borders.

"None of those exist in any quantity in NY, which is still heavily union."
Don't you realize NYC probably has more illegals than most places? And they aren't even Mexicans. Every single NYC mayor from Ed Koch (or maybe even Dinkins) through Bloomberg has prohibited the cops, the schools or anyone else to inquire as to any person's legal status.
Again, I didn't put this thread up to boost or to bash Hillary! (whom I can't stand) but just to spark discussion. I'm sure in my heart she is full of cr*p on this subject, as is almost every other politician, my beloved W included. But, it's a pretty bold stand to take as a NY pol.
"...this immigration peoblem started after the dismantling of the bracero(guest worker program) in the mid 60's."
Well you can thank Fat Drunk Ted Kennedy for that. Also ending our selective system of immigration and going to a lottery system. We no longer get to chose who enters but get stuck with whatever schlub gets his or her name pulled from a hat, from whatever country, for NO REASON AT ALL. If we could pick and chose maybe we would even chose to fill all the slots with industrious Mexicans, or whoever. If the liberals hadn't been running the show maybe we'd never have wandered down the culture and future destroying road of immigration. But right now, all one has to say is there are too many illegals in this country, and they are told they are hateful, hate foreigners, hate businesses, hate, hate, hate.
Well I hate fighting my way through a throng of Ecuadorians sitting on the floor of the lobby of my office building every morning. Most of these people seem to have been deposited there directly from the Ecuadorian countryside, it is obvious many, if not most, have never seen an elevator or a revolving door before. And no, I'm not exagerating. If those people haven't been smuggled in to work on the farms of NJ, with the full knowledge and cooperation of their gov't, I'd be very surprised.
What I hate is that the police in NYC and elsewhere CANNOT even question an arrestee about his (or her) immigration status. What I hate is that people just stroll across our borders at will, deplane at any international airport and overstay their visas with impunity. Sure, sure, most of them probably ARE honest (overlooking their immigration violations), hard working people. But SOME are not. And as of right now, Bernard Kerik, et al, are happy to have the hardworking ones scrubbing their floors for sub-minimum wages while the rest of us can cower and just hope that the violent dishonest ones don't blow up any more buildings, rob us, rape us, or kill us.
And anybody who comes to this country better be ready to learn and do business in English, like all the other groups that came before, and they should be willing to demonstrate that they are healthy, as was also done in the past. And we should be able to chose who to let in, citizenship/legal status in America is something to be EARNED, not won in a lottery.
I grew up in Manhattan, always probably the most cosmopolitan of American cities. Now I live in Hudson County NJ, and all I can say on the entire subject of immigration, legal and illegal is to quote my old boss and say "enough is enough, and that's too much".
This is the next great grassroots movement, Dane, face it. 80% of Americans don't want change because they are all filled with hatred.
"With the murder of Picasso, the Danes have united."
You are close, but it was Van Gogh and the Dutch. But Europe is waking up to their problems with immigration, which seem a lot worse than ours, quite frankly. They've imported nobody but Muslims! Muslims who hate them!
Really, maybe all the smart people have already left Europe, long time gone.
"but don't start a thread on FR complaining that that your daughter has become a prostitute."
That remark is as stupid as it is rude.
In the tradition of Tevya's question about blessing the Czar . . .
May The Lord bless and keep Shrillery far away from our galactic cluster and our time/space dimension as soon as possible.
Use the stargate.
Use a rocket.
Use a big slingshot.
Use . . . a mirror, maybe she'll scare herself into another dimension!
Let me turn the tables, my friend, since you seem to have no problem with opening the floodgates of immigration.
Do YOU ever forsee a time when we should stop the influx of people into the United States of America?
And if your answer is NO, then dare I say you are suicidal, culturally and nationally speaking, that is.
And if your answer is YES, then you are just as "anti-Irish" as I am since YOU obviously want to keep people out of America.
After all, if immigration is so good for our nation, why don't we just open the floodgates and let everybody come in, regardless of their economic status, race, religion, creed, intelligence.
Let me reiterate. I love and respect all peoples. I just think there is a limit, and that we should go slower than we are now.
>"Propaganda comes in all forms, from the left and the right."<
-Showing the photos of thousands of criminals *walking* into our country is propaganda???
>"I have to trust the person who is President."<
Fine, me too, but I expect results.
>"A question, who do you trust more? GW Bush or hillary?"<
-Pres. Bush, hands down.
Trust but verify; where are the results of protecting our southern border???
You never answered my question about a border wall; my post was in response to your a referance to of a "Berlin Wall" What in the HELL is that about???
My post showed documented cases of illegals streaming across the border, at the rate of 8 to 12,000 of them per day.
You have no solutions except to say that a "guest worker" program is a good idea.
Well, I say, build a wall 25 feet high, the entire lenght of the border, and have border police at entry points checking documentation and passports of those coming in.
These people aren't here to respect our laws! Look at the photos research the site, these are criminals here to sell smuggle cocaine, pot, and worse...read the article about terrorists walking across our border unhindered.
And stop referring to the Berlin Wall! Our border needs to be protected, and many of us in the west want politicians to do something about it.
Looks like Hillary has votes from the FreeRepublic Buchanan Brigades already in the bag.
But when she brought up the subject of illegal immigration, people are going to respond to that. It's probably the biggest problem this coutry faces, bar none.
Read this article.
NEWS STORY: Terrorists using the Arizona/Mexico border to cross into the U.S.
I'm reposting it to you Dane, and I'm going to keep reposting it to your immigration comments, until you stop with this tripe about all these wonderful illegals "who are just here for a job that none of the rest of us want."*
*(paraphrased)
OOOPPS!!!!!!!
Of course you are right.
I was thinking of Picasso because I was going to buy one...........and if you believe that.......:)
Tony is correct. Come on Hillary, it's your only chance.
Depends on how much the job would pay.
Hell, if you paid me enough, why not?
"Bush has said many times that the only way this problem is going to be solved is if the Mexicans can get their economy opened up to reform."
Illegal alien amnesty isn't only about Mexicans. The northeastern states are being overrun by illegals from North Africa and the Middle East. There were many illegal North Africans working as security screeners at Boston's Logan Airport on 9/11. Makes you think.
Wait until the liberals and activist courts get their hands on Bush's "Mexicans only" amnesty plan, and rule that you can't "discriminate" against other countries. And start defining new "rights" for these "guest workers." We'll have an open border with Syria and Algeria, and the "guest workers" won't be working at all.
"My beef with you guys is your hatred of good legitmate business owners trying to find good and hard working workers so that they can pursue the American dream of being a business owner and prospering."
So if a "good legitimate business owner" has an American worker at $8/hour, finds an illegal alien willing to work for $6/hour, and fires the American worker for the lower-cost illegal alien, you don't think that's a problem?
I still think you guys have the hots for each other.
My statement had nothing to do with suggesting that the Constitution obligates us to solve problems in Mexico. Why would you even go there?
I would sincerely hope you would not join in the unfair, vicious, verbal assaults displayed by some when it comes to this topic.
