McPhail announces candidacy for 2005 Detroit mayoral election

The Associated Press

DETROIT (AP) — Detroit City Council member Sharon McPhail held a Tuesday evening rally to kick off her campaign for the city's 2005 mayoral election.

McPhail announced her candidacy along with former Detroit Police Chief Benny Napolean, who is running as McPhail's choice for the appointed Deputy Mayor position. The pair has adopted the campaign theme "Elect the Power of 2."

"We multiply possibility by two, we multiply strength by 2, we multiply hope by two," McPhail told supporters gathered at the rally. "Walk with us, all of you, walk with us on this journey to a new Detroit."

McPhail, who was elected to City Council in 2001, ran unsuccessfully for mayor against Dennis Archer in 1993.

She has had public rifts with Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick — also elected in 2001 — over several issues, including changing the embattled police department and the mayor's education plan. The councilwoman also has been an outspoken critic of Kilpatrick's handling of the Detroit casino negotiations.

In January 2003, she said the mayor tried to give her an electric jolt by having someone tamper with her chair massager. Kilpatrick responded by calling the accusation "ridiculous."

McPhail also made headlines attempting to keep a job as attorney for the City of Ecorse while a Detroit council member. McPhail was forced to resign from the Ecorse job June 20, 2003 after the Michigan Court of Appeals said she could not work for both cities.

Besides her run against Archer, McPhail lost elections for Wayne County executive against Ed McNamara in 1998 and for Wayne County prosecutor against Mike Duggan in 2000.

A Coleman A Young disciple. That's really all that needs to be said. About the only positive thing about her is that she's not part of Ed McNamara's crowd, but that's about it.

Kwame Kilpatrick has done some good things for Detroit. Which is why the Coleman Young machine wants him out - and its rumored Governor Jennifer Granholm isn't too happy with Hiz Honnah either. If he's re-elected, he could pay back Granholm by making sure Wayne County stays away from the ballot in 2006. It gonna be a fun New Year.

How does a town with no viable tax base govern itself? Just curious.

During the presidential elections, we see impossibly high turnout and impossibly high support for the 'Rats in Detroit.

So, when I read anything about an inter-Dem election there, the question I'd be asking isn't "who's more popular?", but "which faction is in charge of voter fraud?"

Just lovely language coming from Democrats. As long as they cannibalize each other, the country's better off. Children - pass forth the popcorn!

Detroit just seems, from the outside, like an entirely hopeless enclave lost in the wilderness.

Helpless...is more accurate than hopeless. We are stuck with a hip hop mayor who is immature, alledgedly a cheater, a bully, a whiner and a manipulater. Detroit does have hope however...and between Sharon (Here we go again) McPhail...and Freman Hendrix...I cast my lot with Freman. He sounds as if he has a clue, and he has a plan. He's a family man, who is intelligent understands Detroit politics and can stand as Mayor and be accountable and responsibile for the city. he has already written a detailed document with hsi ideas on what's wrong, how they started and what to do next....it's on his fremanhendrix.com website. QUITE impressive...

For sharon to add Napoleon proves what we already know...She needed SOMEBODY, ANYBODY with a name that people half way respect in order to have a try at this...because she figured they are sick of "my name always poppin' up..".and she's right...She'll probably run for Fire Chief or the Detroit head of preschool military recruitment next.. I heard Sharon speak too...she is just as much hype as Kwame...instead of an earring and hip hop she is fueled by revenge and an "I've gotta prove them wrong mentality"...

Detroit doesn't have time for this right now...We need a positive man with integrity and wisdom to counteract all this foolishness we are dealing with now....More hope....less hype-I'm with Freman...I hope he announces soon so we can get it "started in here" !!!!
