ILLEGAL aliens should NOT even be allowed to attend an American college. My God, they are ILLEGAL!
To: ken21
"American taxpayers should wake up and see how they are being ripped off by the high costs of tolerating illegal aliens in our midst."
Hear, Hear!!!!

As someone who went through the legal channels to immigrate and acquire in-state resident status at school, I feel very cheated!!!

Dissenting Regent Ward Connerly said the result is "just flat wrong": "Every citizen living legally in the other 49 states will be charged a higher tuition rate in California than illegal immigrants who happen to be in California." California universities now make a student from Arizona pay nearly four times as much as an illegal alien. boggles the mind, doesn't it?

Imagine the reaction if legal citizens said en masse, " That's ok. We'll stop paying taxes and let the illegals provide the tax revenue to fund your scheme. "
To: ken21
"Connerly asked, "Why would any legal foreign student pay out-of- state tuition at a UC campus when by becoming illegal he or she can get a huge annual tuition cut of about $11,000?" " There's one little fact that Mr. Connerly is conveniently forgetting to tell you. The only students who qualify for in state tuition are ones who attended and graduated from a state high school.
In other words, simply being illegal does not entitle a person to in state tuition rates. What entitles one to state resident rates is that one be a state resident.
All children of parents who have been and continue to work and pay taxes that support the state colleges should pay the same rate. How do you tell a man who has contributed to the economy of his state and community for many years that his children should have to pay the same high tuition as a student whose family never has and never will contribute a thing to the state
You can add Ward Connerly's name to the scam artist list after the way he is misrepresenting the issue.

state laws vary.
some states i've lived in allow people who have moved to the state for employment to register as in-state the following year.

Only in your world are illegals residents of a foreign country.

"They can't be an illegal and a resident at the same time. "States define state residency, the national government defines citizenship and immigrant status. You'll learn that when you take high school civics.

For what its worth, you have my respect for doing it right, El Conservador. I have little respect for those who enter this country illegally and even less for those who stick up for them.

yeah, but citizens don't do that; they just pay taxes and get up in the morning and go to work.

When I studied civics in high school over 25 years ago they taught me that federal law supercedes state law. So, if someone is considered, by federal law, an illegal the state can't override that.
I know, I know, in the bayou things are "different".

There's no conflict between "citizen" and "resident". Two entirely different concepts.

Selective reading comprehension? Or did you miss this paragraph in the article:
Federal law (Title 8, Chapter 14, Sec. 1623) states: "an alien who is not lawfully present in the United States shall not be eligible on the basis of residence within a State ... for any postsecondary education benefit unless a citizen or national of the United States is eligible for such a benefit (in no less an amount, duration, and scope) without regard to whether the citizen or national is such a resident."
Gee, there's that pesky Title 8 again. Of course I akways thought Chapter 13 was more fun to read.
