British National Party leader detained [arrested] after calling Islam 'wicked faith'

LONDON (AFP) - The leader of the rightwing British National Party(BNP), Nick Griffin, was arrested Tuesday after he called Islam a "vicious, wicked faith" in a television documentary.

Griffin, 45, was arrested on suspicion of "incitement to commit racial hatred" and held for questioning by police in northern England before he was released on bail several hours later.

When asked if he considered Islam a "vicious, wicked faith", Griffin urged reporters to study the Koran for themselves before saying: "There are aspects of that religion which are wicked."

He then condemned the treatment of women under Islam.

The BNP, which won 800,000 votes but no seats in the European elections in June, charged the arrest was part of a "crude" bid by Prime Minister Tony Blair (news - web sites)'s government to win back Muslim votes lost over his war in Iraq (news - web sites).

A BNP spokesman said four non-uniformed police officers raiding the family farmhouse in Wales "awoke the Griffin household from their sleep" early Tuesday.

Griffin was the 12th person arrested in connection with the investigation into the BBC documentary aired in July.

The BNP's founding chairman John Tyndall, 70, was arrested on suspicion of the same offense on Sunday following a speech he made in the northwestern city of Burnley in March.

Well, I guess it's going to take planes flying into Buckingham Palace and the Houses of Parliament to convince them. Too bad.

Many people expect some kind of starter cannon to go off, signaling the end of liberty.

What is this? I see it on FreeRepublic from time to time and do not know what it means.

It's a polite way of invoking the Almighty.
I don't know the origins, but it may have had it's outgrowth from
the (AFAIK) the Jewish name for the Almighty which was without vowels.

I'm no expert on this...and hope more the more knowledgeable will help out...

You said -- "The rest of the West has gone insane."

Well, it appears that it's working its way here, too. It's already being worked into our system by means of the limitations of free speech which one could argue from the political and religious sides.

From the political sides, it's being worked in there with the campaign finance laws. From the religious side, from the issues of abortion, intelligent design (or the evolution debate, and getting it inside of schools), the ten commandments, and "Christmas" (or the "holidays" if you will...).

The craziness is already here.

CAIR will definitely make sure of that (getting arrested, that is...).

What was the UK called in 1984 again? Might be time to break out the term now.

Between this and Belgium's banning of VB, democracy is on the verge of death in Old Europe...

/I really BNP are racist SOBs. I also realize that every man has a right to call any religion "wicked", at least in a free country.

You said -- "Canada also has similar "anti-hate" (anti-free speech) laws now."

Isn't it the same for Australia?

Yup, BNP is the old National Front dressed in suit & tie.
However, as the main parties refuse or are too wimpy to hold constructive debate about immigration, role of islam etc, them they can hardly complain if fringe parties arise - as they have in The Netherlands for example.
I read somewhere there has been no substantive debate on immigration in general in parliament since Enoch Powell's "Rivers of Blood" speech in mid 60s !

You said -- "What is this? I see it on FreeRepublic from time to time and do not know what it means."

It comes from "Jewish sensitivies" and not naming the "name of God" -- therefore saying "G-d". It's sort of like how people write swear words here (without "actually" swearing, you see...). Although, I'm not equating the name of God with swear words (mind you).

They can run off all the Non-Moos and have a pure Eurotrash Islamic State within a decade or so...

Up until now I thought the UK erred on the liberal side of free speech.

I kept hearing of some Imam (if that is the correct term for Muslim clergymen) issuing edicts saying it was right for Muslims to resist American and British forces in Iraq, or to kill women and children for such and such, etc.

I always thought that those speeches went beyond the bounds into inciting criminal behavior.

But this, unless there are some important details being left out, is almost too shocking to believe.

It is now a crime to criticize Islam in the UK?

Glad you posted it. Have to mention this though. 8.24 am PST today posted by TrebleRebel. Excellent says I. A lot of give and take by sanctimonious Brits ( my countrymen) about as 'ow - yes we have free speech, but no incitement to violence etc. This on the previous post.

'Eld forth meself. To my chagrin, I missed the opportunity to get all my points in. Here is one that indicates what this poor deluded country has to put up with. Dr. Theodore Dalrymple wrote that a friend had watched Islamists screaming for the death of Salman Rushdie. It was in the streets of a Yorkshire city. The fatwa had just been put out. The friend said to a policeman. "Why do you not arrest that man (screamer) for a "hate crime"?. He persisted and the Bobby said " F- off, or I will arrest you". I stand corrected but it seems a fatwa goes unpunished.

Once again, I do urge people to be careful. What ever Griffin is, and who knows, his views may be "over the top" or whatever, believe this. The BBC are corrupt shills and paid infiltrators then make "news" for them . Then, having created that "news", they put it out as fact. I think Americans have had a little experience with their own major networks. Poor old David Kelly, if anyone remembers. Ah lovely to be on the old internet.
